Jake Bain is an openly-gay football player at John Burroughs high school who became the target of 11 members of the Westboro Baptist Church on Monday, March 12, when they harassed him over his sexual orientation. What the protestors didn’t anticipate was that they would be met by 500 to 600 counter-protests from Pride STL and friends and allies, as reported by Outsports.com.

The school, through its Twitter account, sent a congratulatory message for Bain and his allies, which read, “JBS stood tall and proud in the face of hatred and bigotry”. Bain, moved by all the support and encouragement he received, also tweeted thanking those who stood by the LGBTQ community and quoting Martin Luther King, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.”

Bain is set to attend college at Indiana State on a football scholarship. After coming out as gay last season, he has become an advocate for the rights of the LGBTQ community.
