Mutombo, embajador de la Liga por todo el mundo y presidente de la fundación que llevaba su nombre y que creó en 1997, falleció al no poder superar el cáncer cerebral con el que llevaba luchando desde hace algún tiempo, desde 2022. The world of basketball is in mourning after learning the sad news of the death of the former Congolese player. The NBA itself announced on social media with a statement the death of the former player, a member of the Hall of Fame and one of the best blockers of all time. Mutombo, an ambassador for the League around the world and president of the foundation that bore his name and that he created in 1997, died after being unable to overcome the brain cancer that he had been battling for some time, since 2022. En la pista fue uno de los mejores taponadores y defensores en la historia de la NBA. Fue de la cancha, puso su corazón y su alma intentando ayudar a los demás". Además, el propio Slver destacó que "no ha ha habido nadie más cualificado que Dikembe para trabajar como embajador de la NBA en el mundo. In addition, Silver himself stressed that "there has been no one more qualified than Dikembe to work as an ambassador for the NBA in the world. Se retiró del baloncesto activo en la temporada 2008-09. Entre sus logros en la pista destaca sus cuatro títulos como mejor defensor de la Liga, las tres veces que fue elegido en el mejor equipo de la temporada y los ocho All Stars que jugó. Mutombo es vigésimo en rebotes en la historia de la NBA con un total de 12.359 y sus 3.289 tapones le hacen ser segundo en esta clasificación sólo por detrás de Hakeem Olajuwon.

His on-court achievements include four NBA All-Defensive Player of the Year titles, three All-Star team selections and eight All-Star appearances.
