ST. LOUIS, Mo.
St.Louis City faces another violent weekend
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - A violent Mother's Day weekend in downtown St. Louis has some city leaders stating that the city is nearing a breaking point.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a double shooting that injured a man and a woman on 7th Street near Locust. The victims told police that a dark-colored SUV approached them, and someone inside started shooting. The victims drove themselves to the hospital.
The police reported that the man was shot in the head and arm and is in critical condition. The woman suffered a graze wound.
According to the police, the double shooting may be connected to a previous incident on Locust near 9th Street.
In a video posted on Twitter by the advocacy group Citizens for a Greater Downtown St. Louis, a crowd can be seen gathering around people fighting in the middle of the street. Officers said they were breaking up the fight when they heard shots fired around the corner. Police found two cars with bullet holes, but no one inside the vehicles was hit by the shots.
District 8 Councilwoman Cara Spencer said on Sunday that she is witnessing a growing number of people fearing to visit downtown St. Louis.
"We are at a critical point. We have to get control of what happens downtown, or we will lose the downtown," Spencer explained. "Frankly, downtown St. Louis is the heartbeat, the economic engine of our city, our region, and the state of Missouri, so this is of utmost importance."
Spencer mentioned that the two major challenges facing the city of St. Louis are problematic property owners and the state legislature allowing people to openly carry firearms on the city streets. She said that a push to change city ordinances would help the city and police hold short-term rental property owners accountable.
"To register them, have a point of contact so that immediately when there's a problem, we can contact the property owner," Spencer shared. "One of the issues you have is that when there's a problem, the police can't enter the property without the permission of the property owner. Registering Airbnbs will allow our police to immediately communicate with the property owner and gain access to some of these parties and things that shouldn't be happening, and that will be a really important tool in combating this problem."
Last week, the police department spoke about their efforts to curb weekend violence in downtown St. Louis.
"It's very chaotic for officers. There are many apprehensions, but if we can execute some of these individuals if they're involved in these incidents," explained Mayor Ryan Cousins. "If someone is a convicted felon, obviously, we will make an arrest and take their weapons, but for the most part, it's just people downtown. We have to create a strong presence, and hopefully, that will deter people from coming downtown or anywhere else in this city and carrying weapons."
Mayor Cousins said that the department will deploy a summer violence detachment and cruiser with officers from specialized units to help patrol downtown on weekends.
