“FINANCIAL MOMENT” OF THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ: Could Gulf Cooperation Council Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) Become War Reparations for Iran?

After the military phase—the Israel/U.S. attack against Iran—which led to the Persian nation's masterful asymmetric warfare strategy that identified America's Achilles’ heel by closing the Strait of Hormuz, effectively targeting the multidimensional jugular vein of the West, the conflict moved into its geoeconomic phase.
This phase has included rising prices for hydrocarbons, fertilizers, helium, and sulfuric acid, while seven undersea internet cables remain at risk in the seabed. Any disruption to these cables could disconnect up to 30% of internet communications between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Asia.
Now, the conflict has entered its most delicate phase: the financial stage. Inflation has spread throughout the United States, particularly through soaring gasoline prices. Meanwhile, China and Japan, for different reasons and amid the ongoing battle between the petrodollar and the petroyuan, have begun reducing significant portions of their U.S. Treasury bond holdings.
This comes in addition to the tremendous hidden—and often deliberately concealed—impact on the massive financial derivatives market, which is largely controlled by Wall Street banks and, to a lesser extent, London’s financial institutions.
The derivatives market is a financial time bomb that remains largely ignored by the general public, despite the abundance of available data.
According to the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, and often referred to as the "Central Bank of Central Banks," over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives—which rely heavily on what the author describes as "invisible accounting"—reached approximately $846 trillion as of last year.

Of this amount:
Interest-rate derivatives account for approximately $666 trillion.
Foreign exchange derivatives account for roughly $155 trillion.
The remainder consists of credit, equity, and commodity derivatives.
This represents nearly eight times the size of the global economy, which the International Monetary Fund projects will reach approximately $126.3 trillion in GDP by 2026.
Meanwhile, financial analyst Dennis Small of EIR estimates the derivatives market could be worth as much as $2 quadrillion, nearly double BIS estimates.
As part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) reportedly facilitated through Pakistan’s mediation efforts, Iran has requested the release of its frozen assets and war reparations from five of the six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, excluding Oman.
Oman appears to have aligned itself with Iran in defending their shared sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, where the two countries have reportedly begun collecting transit fees from oil tankers passing through the strategic waterway in both directions.
British analyst Alastair Crooke has estimated that annual revenues from these transit fees collected jointly by Iran and Oman could reach $1 trillion, a phenomenon he describes as the "Hormuz Strait Effect."
Facing the Trump administration’s refusal to pay war reparations estimated at $270 billion, the author advances the hypothesis that Washington could pressure its Gulf allies to shoulder the burden instead.
According to Deloitte, GCC sovereign wealth funds collectively manage approximately $6 trillion, representing nearly 40% of all sovereign wealth fund assets globally.
1-Emiratos Árabes Unidos (EAU) con US$3 billones en sus diversas variantes como ADIA, Mubadala, etc.---por cierto, la capital Abu Dabi se denomina como “la capital de capitales”;
2-Arabia Saudita con US$1.15 billones;
3- Kuwait US$1 billón;
4- Qatar US$580,000 millones;
5- Omán US$60,000 millones y;
6- Bahréin US$18,000 millones.
The sovereign wealth fund holdings of the six GCC petro-monarchies are estimated as follows:
1. United Arab Emirates: $3 trillion
2. Saudi Arabia: $1.15 trillion
3. Kuwait: $1 trillion
4. Qatar: $580 billion
5. Oman: $60 billion
6. Bahrain: $18 billion
The author suggests Oman may be excluded from any compensation framework due to its alignment with Iran.
He also notes that Iran is reportedly seeking compensation from Jordan, which served as a staging ground for Israeli and American operations against the Persian nation.
These sovereign wealth funds were largely built beginning in the 1970s during the Persian Gulf oil boom, fueled by revenues from oil and liquefied natural gas exports.
While emphasizing that he is neither promoting anti-Arab nor pro-Iranian positions, Jalife argues that it cannot be ruled out that the Trump administration could encourage Iran to receive compensation equivalent to approximately 5% of the sovereign wealth funds held by the five GCC petro-monarchies, excluding Oman.
In addition to reparations, negotiations surrounding the release of Iranian assets and the lifting of sanctions must also address substantial frozen funds, including:
1-Activos congelados directamente por EU:US$2,000 millones;
Approximately $2 billion in Iranian assets frozen directly by the United States.
Up to $120 billion globally blocked as a result of U.S. sanctions, held in countries including Qatar, South Korea, Japan, India, and China.
Reports suggest that as part of a broader settlement between Washington and Tehran, the Trump administration may be willing to release as much as $20 billion of those frozen assets.
