Coffee is one of the world's most popular beverages and a morning ritual for boosting energy or simply enjoying a peaceful moment. While its dark color can stain teeth, and brushing may seem like the obvious solution, experts recommend a few simple habits to help protect your tooth enamel.
¿Por qué el café mancha los dientes?
Why Does Coffee Stain Your Teeth?
Experts at CafeKhaley, a specialty functional coffee brand, explain that coffee has an acidity level of approximately 5 on the pH scale.
"This acidity is enough to temporarily soften your enamel. In addition, coffee contains strong natural pigments," the experts explain.

As coffee comes into contact with your teeth, it temporarily opens microscopic pores in the enamel, allowing those pigments to attach to the surface and create the familiar yellowish discoloration.

Coffee has a pH of about 5.0, making it significantly more acidic than the mouth's natural pH, which is typically around 7.0 and considered neutral.
Experts at ORL Cares explain that when the oral pH drops to 5.5 or lower, the minerals responsible for keeping teeth strong begin to leave the enamel.
However, coffee is not the only acidic beverage. Flavored waters, citrus drinks, and soft drinks often have pH levels between 2.0 and 3.5. Even some toothpastes have been measured at a pH of around 4.22.

Tips to Protect Your Enamel While Drinking Coffee
There are three simple recommendations that can help preserve your tooth enamel.
1. Avoid brushing your teeth immediately before or after drinking coffee. It is best to wait about 30 minutes before brushing. Coffee temporarily softens enamel, and brushing right

away can increase wear and allow pigments to penetrate more easily.
2. Drink a glass of water after finishing your coffee. This helps rinse away remaining pigments and restore your mouth's natural pH. After about 30 minutes, you can brush your teeth as usual.
3. Follow these same steps when drinking coffee with milk, a latte, or a cappuccino. Although these drinks contain milk, they are still acidic and may affect your enamel in a similar way.
Incorporating these simple habits into your daily routine can help keep your smile brighter and protect your tooth enamel over time.
