A 52-year-old man was sentenced to 16 and a half years in prison in Wisconsin after fabricating threats against former US President Donald Trump in an attempt to frame a Mexican immigrant and have him deported.

Demetric DeShawn Scott fue declarado culpable en enero por un jurado del condado de Milwaukee de los delitos de robo de identidad, intimidación de testigos, imprudencia temeraria y violación de las condiciones de la libertad bajo fianza. La jueza Kristy Yang impuso una pena de un año y seis meses por el cargo de robo de identidad, cinco años por intimidación, diez años por imprudencia temeraria y 882 días por la violación de las condiciones de fianza, tiempo que ya había cumplido.

Demetric DeShawn Scott was found guilty in January by a Milwaukee County jury of identity theft, witness intimidation, wanton endangerment, and violating the terms of his bail. Judge Kristy Yang imposed a sentence of one year and six months for identity theft, five years for witness intimidation, ten years for wanton endangerment, and 882 days for violating the terms of his bail, time which he had already served.

The incident occurred in September 2023, when Ramón Morales Reyes was riding his bicycle in Milwaukee. According to authorities, Scott physically assaulted him, stabbed him with a box cutter, and stole his bicycle before fleeing. At the time, the defendant was free on bail for a separate burglary case.

After being arrested hours after the attack, Scott wrote several letters from jail, impersonating Morales Reyes. In the messages, sent to state and federal officials, he threatened to assassinate Trump during a political rally. According to the investigation, his intention was to have Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detain the immigrant and thus affect his own legal proceedings.

In May 2024, ICE agents arrested Morales Reyes after he dropped his daughter off at school. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem shared the immigrant's photograph on social media along with an excerpt from the purported letter. At the time, the arrest was presented as a success in security operations.

Furthermore, recordings of calls Scott made from jail revealed conversations about sending correspondence and a plan to have immigration authorities detain another person. The defendant eventually admitted to writing the threats.

He currently resides in Milwaukee with his family and has applied for a U visa, intended for victims of crime. He is married with three U.S. citizen children and has no criminal record in Wisconsin, according to court records.
