Trump’s “Map War” That Is Dragging in Mexico and Canada

A very personal style of President Trump involves his maps and/or memes, through which he attempts to dissuade his adversaries.

Sometimes it achieves its objectives—as in the humiliating case of Venezuela; at other times, it has a boomerang effect—such as the war against Iran (the Strait of Hormuz has even been renamed the “Trump Strait”); and at other times, these actions must be taken very seriously as credible warnings—which, incidentally, are not original ideas of Trump’s, but rather part of the US neocolonial imperial framework shared by both Democrats and Republicans.

The famous “Monroe Doctrine” has never ceased to exist since its inception 203 years ago (https://bit.ly/4cvxwJK). The only thing that has changed is its mode of application—much like an accordion that expands or contracts depending on the global geopolitical and geofinancial landscape.

The issue of maps is highly controversial, and it has recently come to the fore with the correction—at the UN—of the Mercator projection, which exaggerated Greenland's size sixteenfold and significantly diminished Africa's; this was replaced by a map more faithful to actual geography—the Equal Earth projection—in which Africa regains its true dimensions, while Greenland is reduced to its actual, much smaller size.

The United Nations has just approved the “Equal Earth” map by a vote of 164 to 1, after the US labeled it a “radical ideological project (https://bit.ly/3TqiSwR).”

In reality, Africa—measuring 30.4 million km²—is 14 times larger than Greenland, which measures 2.16 million km².

I will address the unviability and viability of the “Trump maps” from a geopolitical perspective.

First the unviability: The modified map in Truth Social about the capture and/or balkanization of Iran (https://bit.ly/3SUR8QQ).

It must be emphasized that Iran is NOT Venezuela (https://bit.ly/4xPuXuC) and that Trump’s threat to balkanize Iran belongs more to the realm of his deterrent fantasies; in reality, what the controversial U.S. president may be seeking is a graceful exit just 55 days before the U.S. midterm elections, at a time when the price of oil—specifically the Murban variety (Abu Dhabi’s flagship crude; ADNOC)—rose today to US$119 per barrel.

(https://bit.ly/3TmB7TR)”.

It is worth noting that Trump asks: “Now that we have the Strait of Hormuz under U.S. control, should we change its name to the Trump Strait? (https://bit.ly/3TmB7TR)”

When it comes to tangible, verifiable facts, the US does not control that strait—whether it be called Hormuz or "Trump"—; instead, it is under the dominion of Iran, shared with Oman.

The highly punctilious Iranian embassy in Sierra Leone retorted with another map showing US territory divided between Mexico and Canada (https://bit.ly/4r0APOS). The location of the post—Sierra Leone—is striking, and the map itself is not entirely far-fetched. In a synchronized move, the Iranian embassy in Sarajevo also responded to Trump with an image that was anything but funny (https://bit.ly/4gKSXZP).

The idea of the balkanization of the US has long been discussed: from Joel Garreau’s (of The Washington Post) classic book The Nine Nations of North America to the famous article by veteran Russian diplomat Igor Panarin—published in The Wall Street Journal in December 1998 and reiterated in 2008—which posited the disintegration of the US.

Now for the feasible part: a matter requiring no explanation is the map of Venezuela as the 51st U.S. state—a done deal following the humiliating handover of Venezuelan hydrocarbons to U.S. oil multinationals (https://bit.ly/4hgyGvc).

Trump’s latest map of the “United States of America”—which subsumes Iceland, Greenland, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean (extending as far as Venezuela) under the U.S. flag—has caused a major stir, yet in my view, it is not at all far-fetched.

The Financial Times posted an illustrative map and reported that Iceland’s Prime Minister described the image—which showed a US flag covering Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Iceland, and other countries—as “an insult to Icelanders, Canadians, and Greenlanders (https://bit.ly/3To6mhk).” It is worth asking the globalist, neoliberal, monarchist newspaper—the FT—whether this “is not an insult to Mexicans and Latin Americans.”

The FT adds that “Iceland summons the US ambassador over Trump’s map featuring the US flag.”

In my view, this recent map of North America—extending from Iceland to the Caribbean—is by no means far-fetched, as it entails significant local and idiosyncratic geopolitical interpretations specific to Greenland, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, each of which warrants special treatment.

Incidentally, the interview conducted by the Norwegian Glenn Diesen with economist Richard Wolff—professor emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Amherst—titled "The New Phase of US Colonialism" (https://bit.ly/46NdruV), was also noteworthy; in it, Wolff asserts that US neocolonial policy primarily absorbs Canada and Mexico.

New Mexico a “New America (https://bit.ly/4gTDiHL)”.

Is Trump "de-Mexicanizing" the U.S. states bordering Mexico?

Glenn Diesen himself posts that "when everything goes wrong, you have to create your own victories," referring to the renaming of New Mexico on the map to "New America" (https://bit.ly/4gTDiHL).

Likewise, Trump’s fierce feud with one of his worst enemies—Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney—inspired him to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America (https://bit.ly/4cvIGy8).”

The crowning of the Monroe Doctrine—transmuted into the “Donroe Doctrine”—is caricatured by the Global Times (an unofficial mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party), depicting a new “King Monroe” who faces a far-from-easy task in absorbing Latin America (https://bit.ly/3SyhMio). This absorption was previously championed by Thomas Barnett—a military strategist and Naval War College analyst—in his controversial book The Pentagon’s New Map (https://bit.ly/4hgLUbk); nineteen years later, in his 2023 book The New Map of the US (https://bit.ly/3TojP8S), he unabashedly envisions and outlines the integration of the entire Western Hemisphere—including Canada and Mexico—under US hegemony. A sort of Monroe 2.0.

A cada quien su “mapa”.

To each their own “map.”
