Illinois Cites Cahokia Heights Water Suppliers for Disinfection Deficiencies
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has cited water suppliers in Cahokia Heights after detecting lower-than-required chlorine levels during tests conducted on homes in the community. The move comes months after resident-organized tests detected E. coli and other concerns related to drinking water quality.
State inspections found chlorine concentrations of between 0.03 and 0.64 milligrams per liter in some samples, well below the state standard of 1.0 milligrams per liter. Chlorine is used to

kill microorganisms and keep water sanitized as it circulates through pipes until it reaches homes, so residents and community representatives expressed concern about potential health risks.
Water problems are not new to the residents of Cahokia Heights. For years, residents have reported brown or cloudy water, visible particles, foul odors, and unusual tastes. Some have chosen to stop consuming tap water and store bottled water. Adding to these concerns are long-standing infrastructure problems and sewage overflows during periods of heavy rainfall.
The statewide tests were conducted in August on more than 20 homes served by both Illinois American Water and the city's system. Most of the samples with deficient levels of chlorine corresponded to households served by the private company. Total coliform bacteria were also detected in one house, although a second test carried out days later did not find the presence of bacteria.

Illinois American Water maintains that its own analyses show that the water it supplies continues to meet state and federal quality and disinfection requirements. Meanwhile, residents and community organizations continue to test and demand solutions to infrastructure and water quality issues that they say have plagued Cahokia Heights for years.
