St. Louis Jury Awards $732,000 to Former WashU Employee for Age Discrimination

A St. Louis jury awarded $732,000 in damages to a former employee of Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) after determining that she was the victim of age discrimination. Vanessa Meadows, who was 68 years old when the events occurred, sued the institution after being replaced while on medical leave for knee replacement surgery.

Meadows had worked for 23 years in the university system and, at the time of his departure, was in the orthopedic surgery billing department. According to the lawsuit, she received medical clearance to remain off work until July 2022, but during that period she was repeatedly pressured to return before the date set by her doctor.

The former employee alleged that one of her supervisors warned her that she would be fired if she did not return to work by June and that she would no longer have leave for future medical appointments or physical therapy sessions. Shortly after, he received a letter informing him of his dismissal, even though he was still on approved medical leave.

One of the most outstanding elements of the case was the sending of flowers and a card by the university with a message congratulating her on her supposed retirement. Meadows' lawyers argued that the gesture reflected a presumption based on his age and reinforced the idea that the institution expected him to leave his job for good.

The jury ruled in favor of Meadows in the age discrimination lawsuit, awarding him more than $92,000 in lost wages, $140,000 in emotional damages and $500,000 in punitive damages. However, he rejected other allegations related to racial discrimination and disability. The university declined to comment on the verdict after the court decision was announced.
