¿Las vacaciones también deben ser productivas?

Should Vacations Also Be Productive?
There is a moment, usually on the first day of vacation, when the body is still operating in work mode: checking the phone out of habit, calculating schedules, and looking for a pending task where there is no longer one. That small gesture says a lot about our relationship with rest.
For a long time, vacations were understood as a complete pause: stopping, leaving the routine behind, resting without goals, and returning with renewed energy. However, a new trend is beginning to transform that idea: traveling to learn something new.
Mastercard calls this trend “skilliday,” a combination of skill and holiday. According to a survey conducted this year among more than 27,000 people in 28 European countries, 48% plan to learn a new skill during their summer vacation. In addition, 51% say that skill-based trips feel more meaningful than traditional vacations, and 37% have already booked a trip specifically to learn something new.
The data is interesting because it shows a deeper change: many people are no longer looking only to rest from work, but to experience moments that bring back curiosity, creativity, and a sense of purpose.
Learning local cuisine through a recipe passed down from someone’s grandmother, practicing a language until feeling confident enough to order coffee without a translator, taking pottery classes and rediscovering that our hands remember what the mind has forgotten, joining wellness workshops, or exploring traditional crafts can become a valuable form of personal reconnection.
However, for Vacation is a Human Right (VIAHR), this trend also raises an important question: are we discovering a more meaningful way to rest, or are we bringing the logic of productivity even into our free time?
The difference is subtle but important. Everything depends on the reason behind it. Learning out of curiosity feels very different from learning because of pressure.
A painting class that brings peace exists in a very different place within us than one taken with the feeling that even vacations must improve our résumé, personal brand, or performance.

The risk appears when rest becomes another checklist. When traveling stops being a recovery experience and becomes another obligation to “make the most of the time.”
Almost everyone recognizes that feeling: returning from a trip and experiencing, instead of calm, a strange guilt for not having used the time well enough. In a culture defined by constant efficiency, even vacations can become influenced by self-pressure.
However, when understood correctly, learning during vacations can be deeply restorative. The key is intention.
Learning something new can activate our attention in a different way, create space for play, connect us with local communities, and restore a sense of presence that is often lost in daily work routines.
In that sense, the “skilliday” is better understood as an opportunity to ask ourselves what experiences help us reconnect with who we are, rather than as another requirement to perform during vacation.
Rest takes many forms. Sometimes it is complete stillness; other times it is an activity chosen for enjoyment, moving at its own pace, free from urgency and measurement.
Rest can also mean walking without rushing, learning simply for enjoyment, cooking with others, listening to another language, shaping clay, or breathing differently. Small, almost everyday gestures that bring us back to the present moment.
A conscious pause is, at its core, a form of activity: one that restores, renews energy, and leaves us more complete than when it found us.
Perhaps future vacations will be measured less by the destination and more by the quality of recovery they provide. And that is the true point: the best memory of a trip is measured in clarity, connection, and a life regained.
Returning, at the end of the day, a little closer to who we truly are when no one is measuring us.
