More than 30 St. Louis churches targeted for thefts of copper and air conditioning equipment

More than 30 St. Louis churches have been vandalized since early July, many of them located in northern parts of the city still recovering from damage from last year's tornado. According to police, those responsible have stolen copper wires, water meters and air conditioning system components, causing further financial losses for congregations already facing costly repairs.

One of the churches affected was Kossuth Church of God in Christ in the O'Fallon neighborhood, where thieves climbed onto the roof and removed copper wires, condensers and other parts from air conditioning units valued at about $75,000. Mount Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Greater Ville also had components of its new air conditioning systems and a water meter stolen shortly after installing equipment worth about $150,000 after the tornado.

La Policía Metropolitana de St. Louis reconoce que investigar los robos representa un desafío porque algunas iglesias solo son utilizadas ciertos días de la semana y no todas cuentan con cámaras de seguridad. El departamento está aumentando los patrullajes, instalando cámaras en zonas afectadas y enviando agentes personalmente a investigar cada nuevo reporte. St. Louis Metro Police acknowledge that investigating robberies is a challenge because some churches are only used on certain days of the week and not all have security cameras. The department is ramping up patrols, installing cameras in affected areas and sending officers personally to investigate each new report. Authorities are still trying to determine if the incidents are related and if there is one person or several groups behind the robberies.

The new damage represents another obstacle for churches that play an important role in their communities. Some distribute food and supplies, offer GED programs, support people in recovery from addiction and provide temporary housing and shelter during the winter. Several congregations are also struggling with their insurers as they try to repair the damage, but their leaders say they will continue to work to support residents in their communities.
