Miss Sheri's Cafeteria to close after 54 years of tradition in St. Louis

After more than half a century of serving comfort food to generations of families, Miss Sheri's Cafeteria is preparing to close its doors after 54 years of operations. The restaurant, located in Southfield Center, near Lindbergh Boulevard and Baptist Church Road in southern St. Louis County, is considered a local institution and one of the last remaining cafeteria-style establishments in the region.

Its owner, Ron Amann, attributes the decision mainly to the economic consequences left by the pandemic and the increase in inflation. The constant increase in food costs made it increasingly difficult to maintain the affordable prices that characterized the establishment for decades. Although he initially contemplated closing this Sunday, Amann decided to keep the restaurant open a little longer, taking advantage of the months still left on his lease.

Miss Sheri's became known for offering traditional dishes reminiscent of home-cooked food, including liver with onions, turkey sliced in front of the customer, chicken pie, pork chops, roast beef and cod fillet. Freshly baked bread and a wide selection of homemade pies, including coconut cream, chocolate and lemon meringue, also became part of the restaurant's identity.

The story began in 1972, when Amann bought a small coffee shop called Mrs. Oliver's at a medical center in St. Louis Hills. That same year, his youngest daughter, Sheri, was born, whose name he used to rename the business. The concept quickly found acceptance and went on to serve hundreds of customers daily. Over the years, the family opened seven Miss Sheri's coffee shops in different parts of the region. The currently operating location opened in 1987 and is the last one to remain.

The closure also represents the gradual disappearance of a way of eating that for decades was common in St. Louis. Amann recalls a time when there could be about a hundred coffee shops in the region, before casual restaurant chains and new consumption habits transformed the industry. At 82, the entrepreneur leaves behind more than five decades of work and a business in which his children and some of his grandchildren participated, thus closing a chapter of St. Louis' gastronomic history.
