We often live on autopilot, assuming that the pain, anger or fear we experience are absolute dictators with the right to control our behavior. However, neuroscience and modern psychology reveal a principle of absolute freedom: emotion is not the problem; suffering begins when the mind starts writing its own script.

While recently recording an episode for my YouTube channel and podcast The Abundance Revolution, titled “Emotions vs. feelings: how to stop being held hostage by your stories,” I was deeply moved as I reflected on the thin line that separates a biological reaction from a mental prison. Emotion says, “I feel fear,” while the mind translates it as, “I will never be capable.” Emotion says, “I feel sadness,” and the ego concludes, “Nobody loves me.” And that is how we turn a passing spark into a fire that lasts for decades.

This gap between feeling and judging reminded me of the wise Zen parable of the boiling cup of tea. A young disciple came to his master filled with anger over an insult he had received hours earlier at the market. The master poured a cup of boiling tea and held it motionless in his hand without drinking it. After a long time, the young man asked why he was holding the cup if it was burning him. The wise man replied: “The insult was the tea, the person who offended you has already gone on their way, but you have been carrying the hot cup for hours. It is not the insult that exhausts you; it is your refusal to let go of the cup.”

How many of us spend our lives burning our hands by carrying words, betrayals or failures from the past that others have already forgotten? As Viktor Frankl reminded us, between stimulus and response there is a sacred space where our freedom to choose resides. And it is precisely there that authentic spiritual maturity is born: not in refusing to feel, but in learning not to blindly obey everything we feel.

Even the great figures of history have felt emotions. Jesus Christ did not hold back his tears at the tomb of Lazarus or hide his indignation in the temple. Spirituality does not seek to numb our humanity, but to illuminate it. Fear comes to ask us for trust; anger, to mark a healthy boundary; sadness, to heal grief. No emotion comes to destroy you if you stop turning it into a personal judge.

True abundance is not an external event or the result of a perfect environment; it is the state of consciousness in which your inner peace becomes stronger than any narrative that tries to destabilize you. Today I invite you to pause, take a deep breath and ask yourself what boiling cup you have been carrying unnecessarily. Remember that you are not your fear, you are not your anger, and you are certainly not the story you have told yourself about them. You are the free consciousness that can let go of the cup and begin again.

Dios es amor, hágase el milagro.

God is love, may the miracle happen.
