The wooded burial site sits just steps away from the boundaries of a new residential subdivision, raising concerns among residents who were unaware it even existed.
Jen Caldwell, quien vive en la zona desde 2017, aseguró que no sabía que el cementerio estaba allí hasta que alguien tocó su puerta preguntando por él. Explicó que durante el
verano queda prácticamente oculto por la vegetación. “Simplemente no creo que ningún cementerio deba quedar así”, expresó, al describir el estado deteriorado del lugar.Jen Caldwell, who has lived in the area since 2017, said she had no idea the cemetery was there until someone knocked on her door asking about it. She explained that during the summer it is almost completely hidden by overgrown vegetation. “I just don’t think any cemetery should be left like this,” she said, describing its deteriorated condition.

The cemetery contains dozens of gravestones, many bearing German names and dates from the late 1800s. Several obelisks have been knocked over, and many markers show clear signs of neglect. City officials indicated that the land is privately owned, which limits the municipality’s ability to take action.

According to Robert Clouse, director of the Madison County Historical Museum, the site reflects a significant wave of German immigration to the region during the 1880s and 1890s. An old atlas identifies the property as Peter’s Cemetery and indicates that a church once
stood there, which residents believe burned down many years ago.

Meanwhile, residents like Caldwell hope the community can step in to restore and preserve the historic site. “Having those physical remains is a powerful reminder that people were here long before us,” Clouse said, emphasizing the importance of protecting local history.
