El músico y cantautor Joan Manuel Serrat ganó el miércoles el Premio Princesa de Asturias de las Artes, anunció la fundación que concede los galardones.
The musician and singer-songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat won the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts on Wednesday, announced the foundation that grants the awards.
“Sus canciones forman parte de la memoria emocional de varias generaciones en España e Iberoamérica, tanto en catalán como en castellano, dos lenguas que ha fomentado y ayudado a progresar, lejos de cualquier enfrentamiento, desde un equilibrio natural como vehículos de concordia y entendimiento”, señaló el jurado en su acta.
“His songs are part of the emotional memory of several generations in Spain and Latin America, both in Catalan and Spanish, two languages that he has promoted and helped to progress, far from any confrontation, from a natural balance as vehicles of harmony and understanding” , the jury noted in its minutes.
En sus más de 50 años de carrera como compositor e intérprete, Serrat, quien según la Fundación Princesa de Asturias es "una de las figuras más destacadas de la canción moderna”, ha puesto voz a canciones icónicas como “Mediterráneo” o “Hoy puede ser un gran día”, así como a poemas de Antonio Machado, Miguel Hernández, Pablo Neruda o Mario Benedetti.
In his more than 50-year career as a composer and performer, Serrat, who according to the Princess of Asturias Foundation is "one of the most outstanding figures of modern song", has given voice to iconic songs such as “Mediterráneo” or “Hoy puede be a great day”, as well as poems by Antonio Machado, Miguel Hernández, Pablo Neruda or Mario Benedetti.
“Estos poetas han influido en su propia creación musical, que también está marcada por otros géneros, como el folclore catalán, la copla española, el tango, el bolero y el cancionero popular" latinoamericano, apuntó el jurado, que destacó además “su compromiso y defensa de la democracia y los derechos humanos” tanto en España como en Latinoamérica.
“These poets have influenced their own musical creation, which is also marked by other genres, such as Catalan folklore, the Spanish copla, the tango, the bolero and the Latin American popular songbook,” noted the jury, which also highlighted “their commitment and defense of democracy and human rights” both in Spain and Latin America.
El músico barcelonés, de 80 años y que fue pionero de lo que se denominó “nova cançó catalana” en la década de 1960, ha grabado más de 30 discos de estudio a lo largo de su vasta trayectoria. Recibió numerosos reconocimientos, incluyendo el Latin Grammy a la Persona del Año en 2014, la Medalla de Oro en las Bellas Artes en 1994 o la insignia de la Orden de Águila Azteca de México en 2010.
The 80-year-old Barcelona musician, who was a pioneer of what was called “nova cançó catalana” in the 1960s, has recorded more than 30 studio albums throughout his vast career. He received numerous awards, including the Latin Grammy for Person of the Year in 2014, the Gold Medal in Fine Arts in 1994 and the insignia of the Order of the Aztec Eagle of Mexico in 2010.
“No encuentro mejor manera que una distinción tan prestigiosa como esta para despedir una carrera profesional larga y satisfactoria como la mía", dijo Serrat en un comunicado.
“I don't find a better way than a distinction as prestigious as this to say goodbye to a long and satisfying professional career like mine," Serrat said in a statement.
Abandonó oficialmente los escenarios tras un último concierto en diciembre de 2022 en el Palau Sant Jordi de su ciudad natal.

Serrat toma el relevo a la actriz estadounidense Meryl Streep, que ganó el premio el año pasado. Entre los galardonados figuran también las bailaoras de flamenco Carmen Linares y María Pagés, el director inglés Peter Brook o los realizadores estadounidenses Martin Scorsese y Francis Ford Coppola.

El galardón, que tiene una dotación económica de 50.000 euros (53.000 dólares), es el primero de los ocho que concede anualmente la Fundación Princesa de Asturias y que se entregan en octubre en una ceremonia celebrada en Oviedo, en el norte de España.
The award, which has a financial prize of 50,000 euros ($53,000), is the first of eight awarded annually by the Princess of Asturias Foundation and which are presented in October at a ceremony held in Oviedo, in northern Spain.
