El cielo de St. Louis será protagonista la noche del jueves 27 de agosto, cuando el Saint Louis Science Center invite al público a observar un eclipse lunar parcial durante un programa gratuito en el James S. McDonnell Planetarium. La experiencia combinará observación mediante telescopios con la nueva tecnología híbrida instalada este verano en el planetario.

The St. Louis sky will take center stage on Thursday, August 27, when the Saint Louis Science Center invites the public to observe a partial lunar eclipse during a free program at the James S. McDonnell Planetarium. The experience will combine telescope viewing with the new hybrid technology installed at the planetarium this summer.

El evento se realizará de 8:00 p.m. a 11:30 p.m. y permitirá a los visitantes seguir el eclipse mientras ocurre. Durante este fenómeno, la interacción de la luz solar con la atmósfera terrestre puede producir tonalidades rojizas y anaranjadas sobre la superficie de la Luna, creando uno de los espectáculos astronómicos más llamativos visibles desde nuestro planeta.

The event will run from 8:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., allowing visitors to follow the eclipse as it happens. During the phenomenon, the interaction of sunlight with Earth's atmosphere can produce reddish and orange hues across the lunar surface, creating one of the most striking astronomical sights visible from our planet.

“When the Earth’s atmosphere diffuses the path of sunlight during a lunar eclipse, it gives the moon’s surface a reddish-orange hue that is a must see during the peak of the event,” McDonnell Planetarium Manager Will Snyder said.

Una de las características más interesantes del evento es que no dependerá completamente de que el cielo esté despejado. One of the event’s most notable features is that it will not depend entirely on clear skies. If weather conditions prevent direct viewing of the eclipse from St. Louis, the Planetarium will use the new hybrid technology inside the Bill and Laura Orthwein StarBay to livestream the phenomenon from another location.

According to Snyder, although viewing the eclipse directly through a telescope or with the unaided eye is ideal, the technology will allow the Planetarium to present the colors and path of the phenomenon so visitors can experience it as it happens, even if clouds cover the region.

El eclipse lunar parcial en St. Louis no será la única atracción de la noche. The partial lunar eclipse in St. Louis will not be the evening’s only attraction. Telescopes provided during the event and the Orthwein StarBay technology may also allow visitors to observe Venus, Saturn and various deep-sky objects visible during the summer, depending on conditions.

La programación astronómica continuará durante el resto del año. El equipo del Planetario realizará programas mensuales de observación de estrellas el primer viernes de cada mes. Astronomy programming will continue throughout the rest of the year. The Planetarium team will host monthly stargazing programs on the first Friday of each month. Activities will include a brief presentation inside the Orthwein StarBay highlighting objects visible in the region’s night sky and, weather permitting, opportunities to observe them through telescopes.

Upcoming stargazing programs are scheduled for September 4, October 2, November 6 and December 4.

Eclipse lunar en St. Louis: noche gratuita en el Planetario

The Planetarium will also continue its popular Solar Sunday programs, offering opportunities to safely observe solar activity through specialized solar telescopes. They will take place on the third Sunday of each month, with programs scheduled for September 20, October 18, November 15 and December 20.

On July 18, the Saint Louis Science Center debuted major technology upgrades that, according to the institution, established this iconic St. Louis landmark as the largest and most advanced hybrid planetarium in the United States.
