Ileana O’Neill’s art is not merely seen—it is felt. Her bold colors, everyday scenes, and dignified characters invite viewers into a universe where memory, identity, and Caribbean resilience converse with the Latino experience in the United States. Now based in St. Louis, O’Neill has found in painting a bridge between her roots and her present.

Roots That Give Color and Meaning
La conexión de Ileana con el Caribe nace a través de su abuelo materno, originario de Limón, Costa Rica. Aunque nació y creció en Managua, Nicaragua, fue con la colección Caribe My Love que sus raíces afrocaribeñas tomaron forma consciente en su obra. El viaje a Limón en el verano de 2024 marcó un antes y un después en su vida artística y personal.
Ileana’s connection to the Caribbean comes through her maternal grandfather, originally from Limón, Costa Rica. Although she was born and raised in Managua, Nicaragua, it was through her Caribe My Love collection that her Afro-Caribbean roots took conscious shape in her work. Her first visit to Limón in the summer of 2024 became a transformative moment in both her artistic and personal life.
En Limón descubrió una forma de vivir marcada por la cercanía humana, la música constante y un fuerte sentido de comunidad. El mar, la selva y los ríos no son solo paisaje, sino parte de la vida diaria. A pesar de los desafíos históricos y sociales, lo que prevalece es un espíritu resiliente, creativo y profundamente solidario.
In Limón, she discovered a way of life shaped by human closeness, constant music, and a strong sense of community. The sea, the jungle, and the rivers are not just scenery but part of everyday life. Despite historical and social challenges, what prevails is a resilient, creative, and deeply supportive spirit.
La memoria como paleta

Los recuerdos de su infancia entre Managua y León siguen vivos en cada trazo. Las calles llenas de vida, las casas coloridas, los mercados, la música y la cercanía entre vecinos enseñaron a Ileana a encontrar belleza en lo cotidiano. Esa mirada se fusiona hoy con las imágenes de Limón: pescadores, bananales, cacao y el murmullo del mar.
Memories from her childhood between Managua and León remain alive in every brushstroke. Vibrant streets, colorful homes, markets, music, and close-knit neighborhoods taught Ileana to see beauty in everyday life. Today, that perspective blends with images from Limón—fishermen, banana plantations, cacao, and the whisper of the sea.

Como artista latina viviendo en Estados Unidos, Ileana pinta desde la memoria, la curiosidad y la nostalgia. Cada obra se convierte en un diálogo entre su pasado y su presente, donde aparecen personajes, testimonios y fragmentos de la historia colectiva de nuestros pueblos.
As a Latina artist living in the United States, Ileana paints from memory, curiosity, and nostalgia. Each piece becomes a dialogue between her past and present, featuring characters, testimonies, and fragments of the collective history of our communities.
El humor latino también ocupa un lugar especial en su obra. Pinturas como El Pobre Mono, una de sus favoritas, capturan ese ingenio cotidiano que nos caracteriza. Para Ileana, su arte busca conectar con quienes han emigrado y extrañan su tierra, y al mismo tiempo servir como un puente cultural para las nuevas generaciones que crecen lejos de sus raíces.
Latino humor also plays a special role in her work. Paintings like El Pobre Mono, one of her personal favorites, capture that everyday wit so characteristic of our culture. For Ileana, her art aims to connect with those who have migrated and miss their homelands, while also serving as a cultural bridge for new generations growing up far from their roots.
Donde pertenecemos: una exposición con memoria y resiliencia
Where We Belong: An Exhibition of Memory and Resilience
La colección de 10 piezas presentada en la exposición Donde Pertenecemos nació tras su viaje a Limón. Cada obra funciona como un puente entre la memoria familiar y la historia colectiva, abordando tanto momentos simples de la vida cotidiana como temas complejos, como el impacto de la monilia en las plantaciones de cacao y la transformación forzada de comunidades enteras.
The 10-piece collection presented in the exhibition Where We Belong was born after her trip to Limón. Each artwork acts as a bridge between family memory and collective history, addressing both simple moments of daily life and complex issues such as the impact of monilia on cacao plantations and the forced transformation of entire communities.
La exposición fue organizada por Cortex y CIC, en colaboración con LatinxArts, y se presentó durante tres meses —de octubre a diciembre— junto a otros dos artistas latinos. Para Ileana, fue una oportunidad clave para compartir una colección profundamente personal y social.
The exhibition was organized by Cortex and CIC in collaboration with LatinxArts and was on view for three months—from October to December—alongside two other Latino artists. For Ileana, it was a key opportunity to share a deeply personal and socially rooted collection.
Entre las obras más significativas destaca El Rey del Calypso, inspirada en Walter Ferguson, el legendario calypsonian de Cahuita. Representar su legado fue un reto creativo y emocional, al tratarse de una música que es memoria viva.

El proceso creativo de Ileana es intuitivo, narrativo y emocional. Disfruta especialmente la etapa de desarrollo, cuando la pintura comienza a “hablar” y la historia se revela. Casi siempre parte de una emoción, una canción, un recuerdo o una escena cotidiana.
Ileana’s creative process is intuitive, narrative, and emotional. She especially enjoys the development stage, when the painting begins to “speak” and the story reveals itself. She usually starts from an emotion, a song, a memory, or an everyday scene.
Lo que desea que el público se lleve tras ver su obra es una sensación de conexión humana: recordar las propias raíces, reconocer la belleza en lo simple y encontrar inspiración para crear. Exponer en St. Louis significa para ella compartir estas historias con una comunidad diversa y sentir que sus raíces también pertenecen aquí.
