ST. LOUIS, MO. — Una de las celebraciones más importantes de la comunidad latina de St. Louis regresó la noche del viernes 28 de agosto con una propuesta renovada. Los Anthony B. Ramirez Esperanza Awards 2026, organizados por el Hispanic Leaders Group of Greater St. Louis, reunieron en The Sheldon a líderes comunitarios, profesionales, organizaciones, familiares y amigos para reconocer a quienes están contribuyendo al crecimiento y fortalecimiento de la comunidad hispana y latina de la región.
ST. LOUIS, MO. — One of St. Louis' most important Latino community celebrations returned Friday evening, August 28, with a refreshed concept. The 2026 Anthony B. Ramirez Esperanza Awards, organized by the Hispanic Leaders Group of Greater St. Louis, brought community leaders, professionals, organizations, families and friends together at The Sheldon to recognize those contributing to the growth and advancement of the region's Hispanic and Latino community.

A New Experience for a Tradition of Recognition
La edición 2026 cambió considerablemente la dinámica de años anteriores. En lugar de desarrollar toda la celebración alrededor de una cena y baile en un salón, los organizadores apostaron por una experiencia dividida en diferentes espacios y momentos.
The 2026 edition significantly changed the format used in previous years. Rather than centering the entire celebration around a traditional dinner and dance in one ballroom, organizers created an experience that moved guests through different spaces and moments throughout the evening.
La noche comenzó en un ambiente tipo recepción y cóctel, con estaciones de comida latina y la música del Mariachi Azteca, creando el escenario perfecto para conversar, reencontrarse y establecer nuevas conexiones.
The evening began with a cocktail-style reception featuring Latin food stations and music from Mariachi Azteca, creating an ideal atmosphere for conversation, reunions and new connections.
Posteriormente, los asistentes fueron invitados a pasar al teatro de The Sheldon, transformando por completo el ambiente para dar paso a la ceremonia formal de los Esperanza Awards.
Guests were then invited into The Sheldon's theater, completely transforming the atmosphere as the formal Esperanza Awards ceremony began.
Y después de los reconocimientos, la celebración volvió al área social. Esta vez, la música de DJ tomó protagonismo y la pista de baile se llenó rápidamente. Los asistentes respondieron con entusiasmo al nuevo concepto, permaneciendo para convivir, bailar y celebrar juntos.
Following the awards ceremony, guests returned to the reception area, where DJ music took over and the dance floor quickly filled. Attendees enthusiastically embraced the new format, staying to socialize, dance and celebrate together.
La nueva fórmula demostró que era posible modernizar el evento sin perder aquello que durante décadas ha caracterizado a esta celebración: reconocer el liderazgo mientras se fortalecen los vínculos dentro de la comunidad.

Anthony B. Ramírez Esperanza Award

El reconocimiento principal fue el Anthony B. Ramirez Esperanza Award, considerado el máximo honor de la organización y destinado a reconocer toda una trayectoria de liderazgo excepcional y un impacto duradero en la comunidad latina de St. Louis.
The evening's highest recognition was the Anthony B. Ramirez Esperanza Award, honoring a lifetime of exceptional leadership and lasting impact on St. Louis' Latino community.

The evening’s top honor went to Yvonne Buhlinger, a figure who has been closely linked to community and health work in St. Louis for decades.
Buhlinger serves as Vice President and Chief Development and Community Relations Officer at Affinia Healthcare, an organization that provides health services to thousands of people in the region, including families from historically underserved communities.
The award recognized a career that combines institutional leadership, resource development, and community relations, establishing her as a key voice working to expand opportunities and access to essential services.
Finalista: Ness Sandoval – St. Louis University
Ness Sandoval representa otra vertiente del liderazgo latino: la investigación, educación y utilización de datos para entender las transformaciones de nuestras comunidades.
Profesor de Sociología y Antropología en Saint Louis University, su trabajo académico incluye demografía, desigualdad social y análisis geoespacial aplicado al desarrollo comunitario.
Su nominación reconoce también la importancia de que la comunidad latina tenga representación dentro de las instituciones académicas y en las conversaciones sobre el futuro de nuestra región.
Finalist: Ness Sandoval – Saint Louis University
Ness Sandoval represents another facet of Latino leadership: research, education, and the use of data to understand the transformations within our communities.
A professor of Sociology and Anthropology at Saint Louis University, his academic work encompasses demography, social inequality, and geospatial analysis applied to community development.
His nomination also recognizes the importance of Latino representation within academic institutions and in conversations regarding the future of our region.

Leticia Seitz, representante de Latinos En Axion STL, completó el grupo de tres finalistas al máximo reconocimiento.
Su nominación puso nuevamente sobre el escenario la importancia del activismo, la organización y la participación comunitaria como herramientas para fortalecer la presencia y las voces latinas en St. Louis.

Leticia Seitz, representing Latinos En Axion STL, rounded out the group of three finalists for the top honor.
Her nomination once again highlighted the importance of activism, organizing, and community participation as tools to strengthen the Latino presence and voice in St. Louis.

Ashrei Foundation recibe el reconocimiento al impacto comunitario
La segunda categoría, Community Impact Award, reconoció a organizaciones que están generando un impacto significativo y medible para la comunidad latina mediante liderazgo, servicio o innovación.
The Community Impact Award recognized organizations making a meaningful and measurable difference for the Latino community through leadership, service or innovation.
Los tres finalistas fueron Ashrei Foundation, St. Louis Colombian Society y STL Santos.

Ganador: Ashrei Foundation
El reconocimiento fue para Ashrei Foundation, organización de St. Louis que trabaja en temas de justicia económica, acceso a recursos, inmigración y eliminación de barreras que afectan particularmente a poblaciones vulnerables.
Uno de sus programas es el North City Photo ID Project, que proporciona asistencia logística y financiera a personas que enfrentan dificultades para reunir los documentos necesarios para solicitar identificaciones de Missouri y actas de nacimiento. Ashrei también funciona como organización central de la Missouri State ID Access Coalition.

The award went to the Ashrei Foundation, a St. Louis-based organization working on issues of economic justice, access to resources, immigration, and the removal of barriers that particularly affect vulnerable populations.
One of its programs, the North City Photo ID Project, provides logistical and financial assistance to individuals struggling to gather the documents needed to apply for Missouri identification cards and birth certificates. Ashrei also serves as the lead organization for the Missouri State ID Access Coalition.
The organization also plays a significant role in immigration-related matters. It participates in regional response efforts regarding immigration issues and helps coordinate support for immigrant families facing economic hardship or the impact of immigration enforcement actions.
Its Executive Director, Sara Ruiz, has approximately two decades of experience working on immigrant justice issues in St. Louis.

La St. Louis Colombian Society representa otra dimensión fundamental del impacto comunitario: mantener viva la cultura y crear espacios que permitan a las nuevas generaciones conservar sus vínculos con sus raíces.
Su presencia entre los finalistas reconoce el valor de las organizaciones culturales que reúnen familias, promueven tradiciones y fortalecen la identidad de las comunidades latinoamericanas que han hecho de St. Louis su hogar.

The St. Louis Colombian Society represents another fundamental dimension of community impact: keeping culture alive and creating spaces that allow new generations to maintain ties to their roots.
Its selection as a finalist recognizes the value of cultural organizations that bring families together, promote traditions, and strengthen the identity of the Latin American communities that have made St. Louis their home.

STL Santos ha construido comunidad alrededor de una de las grandes pasiones latinas: el fútbol.
Como grupo de aficionados de St. Louis CITY SC con una fuerte identidad latina y en español, su trabajo va más allá de apoyar a un equipo. Su presencia ha ayudado a crear un espacio donde fútbol, identidad cultural y comunidad se encuentran.
Finalist: STL Santos
STL Santos has built a community around one of the great Latin passions: soccer.
As a St. Louis CITY SC fan group with a strong Latin identity and a Spanish-language focus, their work goes beyond simply supporting a team. Their presence has helped create a space where soccer, cultural identity, and community come together.
Rising Advocate Award
Maria Rosario reconocida entre una nueva generación de defensores de la comunidad
El Rising Advocate Award reconoció a una persona que está avanzando en el terreno de la defensa comunitaria, haciendo una diferencia significativa y contribuyendo a construir el futuro de la comunidad latina.
The Rising Advocate Award recognized an individual stepping into advocacy, making a meaningful difference and helping shape the future of the Latino community.
Las finalistas fueron Lizette Matta, Maria Rosario y Sarah Kaul.

El reconocimiento fue otorgado a Maria Rosario, presidenta de la Puerto Rican Society of St. Louis.
Desde esta organización, Rosario trabaja para mantener presente la cultura puertorriqueña en St. Louis, promover las tradiciones de la isla y reunir a la comunidad alrededor de actividades culturales y sociales.
Una parte especialmente importante de ese trabajo son las iniciativas y eventos que contribuyen a recaudar fondos para becas escolares, convirtiendo la celebración de la cultura en una oportunidad para apoyar la educación de nuevas generaciones.
Winner: Maria Rosario
The award was presented to Maria Rosario, president of the Puerto Rican Society of St. Louis.
Through this organization, Rosario works to keep Puerto Rican culture alive in St. Louis, promote the island's traditions, and bring the community together through cultural and social activities.
A particularly important part of this work involves initiatives and events that raise funds for scholarships, turning cultural celebrations into opportunities to support the education of future generations.
Finalista: Lizette Matta
Lizette Matta ha encontrado en el baile y la cultura una forma de educar y conectar a las nuevas generaciones.
Su trabajo relacionado con Baila Academy utiliza la danza y las expresiones culturales como vehículos para mantener presentes las tradiciones y crear espacios de participación para niños y jóvenes.

Lizette Matta has found a way to educate and connect new generations through dance and culture.
Her work with Baila Academy uses dance and cultural expression as vehicles to keep traditions alive and create opportunities for children and young people to get involved.

La finalista Sarah Kaul representa a una generación joven que combina educación, creatividad y compromiso social.
Estudiante de Washington University in St. Louis, Kaul desarrolla proyectos desde una perspectiva bilingüe e inclusiva y combina intereses en estudios globales, español, antropología, lingüística, música y danza.
Hay además una conexión interesante con otro de los reconocimientos de la noche: Kaul forma parte del equipo de Ashrei Foundation, organización ganadora del Community Impact Award, donde aparece como Immigration Justice Program Coordinator.
Finalist: Sarah Kaul
Finalist Sarah Kaul represents a young generation that combines education, creativity, and social commitment.
A student at Washington University in St. Louis, Kaul develops projects from a bilingual and inclusive perspective, combining interests in global studies, Spanish, anthropology, linguistics, music, and dance.
There is also an interesting connection to another of the evening's honors: Kaul is part of the team at the Ashrei Foundation—winner of the Community Impact Award—where she serves as the Immigration Justice Program Coordinator.
Chairman's Champion Award
Martha Castellanos: toda una vida haciendo comunidad
Uno de los reconocimientos más especiales y emotivos de la noche fue el Chairman's Champion Award, otorgado a Martha Castellanos.
Unlike the other categories, this special recognition placed the spotlight on a woman whose contributions to the Hispanic Leaders Group and St. Louis' Latino community span decades.

Hablar de Martha es hablar de una de esas personas cuyo trabajo muchas veces ocurre lejos de los reflectores, pero sin las cuales numerosas iniciativas comunitarias simplemente no serían posibles.
Desde los primeros años del Hispanic Leaders Group, Martha ha estado presente colaborando, promoviendo eventos, vendiendo boletos y ayudando a recaudar recursos destinados, entre otras causas, a las becas escolares.
Y continúa haciéndolo.
A sus 80 años, Martha sigue trabajando en la YMCA, participando en actividades con niños, mientras dedica parte de su tiempo libre al voluntariado y a apoyar diferentes causas.
Pero quienes la conocen saben que existe otro detalle que describe perfectamente quién es Martha.
Desde hace décadas se encarga de organizar una celebración mensual para los amigos y miembros de la comunidad que cumplen años. Martha toma el teléfono y comienza a llamar personalmente a unos y otros para recordarles la reunión y asegurarse de que nadie falte.
Es un gesto sencillo que, repetido durante tantos años, dice mucho sobre su manera de entender la comunidad: estar pendiente de los demás, reunir a las personas y hacer que cada una se sienta importante.
Por eso, cuando su fotografía apareció en el escenario anunciando el Chairman's Champion Award, el reconocimiento trascendió un premio individual.
Fue también una manera de decir gracias.
Gracias por décadas de voluntariado.
Gracias por ayudar a recaudar fondos.
Gracias por apoyar las becas.
Gracias por reunir a la gente.
Y gracias por seguir haciéndolo.
Martha Castellanos
To speak of Martha is to speak of one of those individuals whose work often takes place away from the spotlight, yet without whom numerous community initiatives simply would not be possible.
Since the early days of the Hispanic Leaders Group, Martha has been there—collaborating, promoting events, selling tickets, and helping to raise funds for causes that include, among others, school scholarships.
And she continues to do so.
At 80 years old, Martha still works at the YMCA, participating in activities with children, while dedicating part of her free time to volunteering and supporting various causes.
But those who know her are aware of another detail that perfectly captures who Martha is.
For decades, she has organized a monthly celebration for friends and community members with birthdays. Martha picks up the phone and personally calls everyone to remind them of the gathering and ensure no one misses out.
It is a simple gesture that, repeated over so many years, speaks volumes about her understanding of community: looking out for others, bringing people together, and making each person feel important.
That is why, when her photograph appeared on stage announcing the Chairman's Champion Award, the recognition went beyond a mere individual honor.
It was also a way of saying thank you.
Thank you for decades of volunteering.
Thank you for helping to raise funds.
Thank you for supporting scholarships.
Thank you for bringing people together.
And thank you for continuing to do so.

Los Esperanza Awards de este año terminaron mostrando diferentes caras del liderazgo.
Yvonne Buhlinger representó una trayectoria de servicio y liderazgo institucional.

40 años de liderazgo y una tradición que continúa
El Hispanic Leaders Group lleva más de cuatro décadas reuniendo líderes, organizaciones, aliados y miembros de la comunidad para impulsar educación, participación cívica, desarrollo de liderazgo y defensa de los intereses de la comunidad hispana y latina.
Los Anthony B. Ramirez Esperanza Awards son una expresión de ese legado.
Y en 2026, el cambio de formato demostró que la tradición también puede evolucionar.
La formalidad y emoción de entregar los reconocimientos desde el escenario de The Sheldon convivieron con algo igualmente importante: la oportunidad de conversar, escuchar mariachi, compartir comida, reencontrarse y terminar la noche bailando.
Fue una celebración del liderazgo, pero también de la comunidad que hace posible ese liderazgo.

40 years of leadership and an enduring tradition
For over four decades, the Hispanic Leaders Group has brought together leaders, organizations, allies, and community members to advance education, civic engagement, leadership development, and advocacy for the Hispanic and Latino community.
The Anthony B. Ramirez Esperanza Awards embody that legacy.
And in 2026, a change in format demonstrated that tradition can evolve, too.
The formality and excitement of presenting awards on the stage at The Sheldon went hand-in-hand with something equally important: the chance to converse, listen to mariachi music, share a meal, reconnect, and end the night dancing.
It was a celebration of leadership, but also of the community that makes that leadership possible.
New format, same Esperanza.
