Hay imágenes que cuesta olvidar. Montañas convertidas en ceniza. Animales huyendo sin saber hacia dónde. Familias obligadas a abandonar sus hogares con la incertidumbre de no saber si volverán a encontrarlos en pie.

Los incendios que hoy golpean a España han dejado una herida profunda en el paisaje, pero también en el corazón de un país entero. La magnitud de la tragedia ha obligado a evacuar a decenas de miles de personas y ha consumido una extensión de terreno sin precedentes en la historia reciente.

Some images are hard to forget. Mountains turned to ash. Animals fleeing with nowhere to go. Families forced to leave their homes, uncertain if they will ever find them standing again. The fires currently battering Spain have left a deep wound—not only on the landscape but also in the heart of an entire nation. The scale of the tragedy has forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people and consumed an expanse of land unprecedented in recent history.

Quisiera abrazar, aunque sea con estas palabras, a quienes han perdido mucho más que una vivienda. Porque una casa no son solo paredes. Es el lugar donde se guardan fotografías, recuerdos, risas, despedidas y sueños. Cuando el fuego lo arrasa todo, también parece llevarse una parte de nuestra historia.

I would like to offer an embrace—even if only through these words—to those who have lost far more than just a house. For a home is more than just walls; it is a place where photographs, memories, laughter, farewells, and dreams are kept safe. When fire sweeps everything away, it seems to take a piece of our history with it, too.

Sin embargo, hay algo que las llamas no pueden consumir: la capacidad humana de levantarse. España ha demostrado una y otra vez que, en los momentos más difíciles, la solidaridad aparece con una fuerza admirable. Bomberos, brigadas forestales, voluntarios, vecinos y profesionales de emergencias nos recuerdan que, frente al desastre, siempre existe un ejército silencioso dispuesto a proteger la vida.

Yet, there is something the flames cannot consume: the human capacity to rise again. Spain has shown time and again that, in the darkest moments, solidarity emerges with admirable strength. Firefighters, forestry crews, volunteers, neighbors, and emergency professionals remind us that, in the face of disaster, there is always a silent army ready to protect life.

Pero acompañar a las víctimas también implica hacernos preguntas incómodas.

But standing with the victims also means asking ourselves uncomfortable questions.

La naturaleza tiene su fuerza. El cambio climático agrava las condiciones y multiplica el riesgo. Sin embargo, toda tragedia de esta magnitud merece ser analizada con rigor, transparencia y sentido de responsabilidad, especialmente por decisiones que pudieron evitar la tragedia. Investigar, aprender y corregir también son actos de compasión hacia quienes hoy lo han perdido todo, hacia la fauna y flora local.

Nature possesses immense power. Climate change exacerbates conditions and multiplies the risk. However, any tragedy of this magnitude demands rigorous, transparent, and responsible analysis—particularly regarding decisions that might have prevented the disaster. Investigating, learning, and correcting course are also acts of compassion toward those who have lost everything, as well as toward the local flora and fauna.

Ojalá el humo no nuble nuestra memoria cuando las llamas se apaguen. Porque el verdadero desafío no termina con la extinción del incendio; comienza cuando decidimos reconstruir los bosques, fortalecer la prevención y cuidar con mayor responsabilidad la tierra que compartimos.

Let us hope the smoke does not cloud our memory once the flames die down. For the true challenge does not end when the fire is extinguished; it begins when we decide to replant the forests, strengthen prevention efforts, and care for our shared land with greater responsibility.

Mi oración está con cada familia afectada, con quienes combaten el fuego poniendo en riesgo su propia vida y con quienes tendrán que empezar de nuevo.

My prayers are with every affected family, with those fighting the fire at the risk of their own lives, and with those who will have to start over.

Que de estas cenizas no nazca únicamente la reconstrucción de un paisaje, sino también una renovada consciencia y políticas que conlleven la protección de estas tierras, que también son el hogar de tantas especies, además de la humana.

May these ashes give rise not only to the restoration of the landscape but also to a renewed awareness and policies that protect these lands—which are home to so many species besides our own.
