Injured Peregrine Falcon Rescued and Released Thanks to World Bird Sanctuary

Halcón peregrino rescatado en St. Louis; Un halcón peregrino herido fue rescatado y rehabilitado por el Santuario Mundial de Aves, con la ayuda de voluntarios dedicados, y finalmente liberado en Cliff Cave Park. 

An injured peregrine falcon was rescued and rehabilitated by the World Bird Sanctuary, with the help of dedicated volunteers, and was finally released at Cliff Cave Park.

El ave, que había sido encontrada en el suelo en el norte de St. Louis el 12 de noviembre, saltó de su caja el miércoles por la mañana y emprendió vuelo, marcando un momento importante tras semanas de cuidados.

The bird, which had been found on the ground in North St. Louis on November 12, leapt from its crate Wednesday morning and took flight, marking a major milestone after weeks of care.

Scott Ruben, voluntario del Santuario, explicó cómo comenzó la operación de rescate. “El ave estaba en el suelo. Le tomé una foto y la envié al Santuario. Luego, un grupo de voluntarios salimos a verla y traerla para que la examinen”, dijo. 

Scott Ruben, a sanctuary volunteer, explained how the rescue operation began: “The bird was on the ground. I took a photo and sent it to the Sanctuary. Then, a group of volunteers went out to find it and bring it in for evaluation.”

Jeff Meshach, subdirector del Santuario, señaló que la subespecie del halcón es conocida como halcón peregrino de la tundra, que puede migrar desde el Círculo Polar Ártico hasta Sudamérica. 

Jeff Meshach, deputy director of the Sanctuary, noted that the bird is a tundra peregrine falcon, a subspecies that can migrate from the Arctic Circle all the way to South America.

El vuelo de liberación se realizó después de que las radiografías confirmaran que el ala necesitaba un ajuste y varias semanas de rehabilitación, todo coordinado por un equipo de voluntarios apasionados por la conservación de aves.

The release flight occurred after X-rays confirmed the bird’s wing required adjustment and weeks of rehabilitation, all coordinated by a team of volunteers passionate about bird conservation.

Donna Ruben, voluntaria, compartió la experiencia de ayudar a una rapaz salvaje: “Las aves son hermosas, y poder acercarme tanto a un animal salvaje y ayudarlo es increíble. ¿En qué otro momento se puede estar tan cerca de una rapaz?” 

Donna Ruben, a volunteer, shared her experience: “Birds are beautiful, and being able to get so close to a wild animal and help it is incredible. When else can you get this close to a raptor?”
