Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City says it will continue to operate "now and in the future" despite facing serious financial problems and increased scrutiny from state and federal authorities. The hospital has millions of dollars in back taxes and unpaid bills, and has a limited time to correct deficiencies pointed out by inspectors.

Federal officials gave the hospital until Nov. 17 to resolve issues related to leadership, oversight and institutional compliance. Failure to do so could result in Gateway losing its participation in the Medicare program, a move that would have a significant impact on its operations. Hospital officials say they have already made changes to address concerns identified during a state inspection in August.

In addition, the company has been sued for unpaid water and energy bills. Representatives for American Healthcare Systems, the hospital's parent company, said the owners have transferred more than $5 million to support the operations of its two hospitals in Illinois

The inspections also pointed to deficiencies in the hospital's administrative structure. For several months, Gateway operated without an active board of directors, an institutional plan and a formal budget, according to government documents. Inspectors also cited four possible violations related to emergency care. Despite these problems, executives insist they have no plans to close, reduce services or leave the Granite City community.
