Roxana teachers reach tentative agreement and avoid immediate strike

just days before teachers were to legally start a strike. The Roxana Education Association and Roxana Community Unit School District #1 had been negotiating a new contract since January.

Both parties announced the progress through a joint statement in which they noted that the agreement reflects a shared commitment to students, recognition of educators and the maintenance of a strong educational workforce. Full details of the agreement will not be released until it is ratified by both union members and the Board of Education.

The agreement comes after at least six bargaining sessions with federal mediators over the past several months. The school year began Aug. 17, the same day the union announced its members had voted to authorize a strike. Thursday was the first day teachers could legally leave their jobs.
