Hundreds of young dancers, dressed in white tutus and with their hair up, gathered at the Plaza Hotel in New York on Wednesday to set a new world record for dancing en pointe in one place. The show was organized by Youth America Grand Prix, a dance scholarship program celebrating its 25th anniversary with three nights of performances at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
Among the dancers were students ages 9 to 19 competing for a scholarship, as well as professional dancers who graduated from the program. With music by Tchaikovsky playing in the background, the dancers stood on tiptoe and quickly shifted their weight from one foot to the other — a step called bourrée — for a full minute.
