Parasite Infection Cases Rise More Than 400 Percent in Missouri

Missouri health officials reported a significant increase in cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal disease caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. So far, 216 cases have been confirmed in the state, an increase of more than 400% from the previous week and well above usual levels for this time of year.

The infection causes prolonged diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, abdominal cramps, and in some cases, dehydration. Specialists explain that the parasite is usually transmitted

through the consumption of contaminated fresh fruits and vegetables, especially lettuce, although investigations continue to determine the origin of the cases registered in Missouri.

However, Missouri officials noted that local infections have a scattered pattern and, for now, do not appear to be part of that same outbreak.
