La estrella de la WNBA Brittney Griner aseguró que su nueva producción documental, centrada en los diez meses que pasó encarcelada en Rusia, guarda paralelos con la situación actual que vive Estados Unidos en medio del endurecimiento a la aplicación de leyes migratorias en Estados Unidos por parte del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE).

WNBA star Brittney Griner said her new documentary, which focuses on the ten months she spent imprisoned in Russia, has parallels with the current situation in the United States amid the tightening of immigration enforcement by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

En declaraciones a The Hollywood Reporter, Griner afirmó que espera que el documental, titulado The Brittney Griner Story, sirva como una advertencia sobre el rumbo que podría tomar el país. La producción se estrenará esta semana en el Festival de Cine de Sundance 2026 y será transmitida posteriormente por ESPN como parte de la serie 30 for 30.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Griner said she hopes the documentary, titled The Brittney Griner Story, will serve as a warning about the direction the country could be heading. The film will premiere this week at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and will later air on ESPN as part of the 30 for 30 series.

“Estamos en un momento muy complicado como país, especialmente por lo que está ocurriendo en Minnesota y en otras ciudades”, expresó la jugadora. “Creo que ahora la gente podrá entender mejor ciertas comparaciones y reflexionar sobre lo que puede pasar si permitimos que esto continúe”.

“We’re in a very complicated moment as a country, especially because of what’s happening in Minnesota and other cities,” the player said. “I think now people will be able to better understand certain comparisons and reflect on what could happen if we allow this to continue.” 

El documental, dirigido por Alexandria Stapleton, retrata las duras condiciones que Griner enfrentó en una colonia penal rusa, conocida por su trato severo a los reclusos. La directora coincidió en que el contexto actual en Estados Unidos otorga una nueva dimensión a la historia. “Espero que la película funcione como una advertencia y ayude a generar conciencia”, señaló.

The documentary, directed by Alexandria Stapleton, portrays the harsh conditions Griner faced in a Russian penal colony, known for its severe treatment of inmates. The director agreed that the current context in the United States gives the story a new dimension. “I hope the film serves as a warning and helps raise awareness,” she said.

Además del encarcelamiento, la producción aborda la infancia de Griner, su carrera universitaria en Baylor, su trayectoria en la WNBA y su relación con su esposa, Cherelle. También se destaca su paso por el baloncesto ruso durante siete años, periodo que antecedió a su arresto en febrero de 2022 por portar cartuchos de vapeo en su equipaje.

In addition to her incarceration, the production addresses Griner's childhood, her college career at Baylor, her WNBA career, and her relationship with her wife, Cherelle. It also highlights her seven years playing basketball in Russia, a period that preceded her arrest in February 2022 for carrying vape cartridges in her luggage.

Griner relató en diversas entrevistas las condiciones inhumanas que vivió en prisión, incluyendo la convivencia con reclusas acusadas de delitos graves y la falta de elementos básicos de higiene. “Hubo momentos en los que me sentí menos que humana”, afirmó.

Griner recounted in various interviews the inhumane conditions she experienced in prison, including living with inmates accused of serious crimes and the lack of basic hygiene. “There were times when I felt less than human,” she stated. 

Tras recibir una condena de nueve años, la jugadora fue liberada luego de diez meses como parte de un intercambio de prisioneros entre Estados Unidos y Rusia en diciembre de 2022. En el documental, el entonces presidente Joe Biden explica que decidió impulsar el acuerdo tras reunirse con la esposa y la representante de Griner en la Casa Blanca.

After receiving a nine-year sentence, the player was released after ten months as part of a prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia in December 2022. In the documentary, then-President Joe Biden explains that he decided to push for the deal after meeting with Griner's wife and representative at the White House.

Aunque su liberación generó críticas debido a que otros ciudadanos estadounidenses permanecían detenidos en el extranjero, Griner aseguró que siempre abogó por la liberación de más prisioneros. “Cuando nos unimos, podemos cambiar lo que está pasando”, concluyó.

Although her release drew criticism because other U.S. citizens remained detained abroad, Griner asserted that she had always advocated for the release of more prisoners. "When we come together, we can change what's happening," she concluded.
