Missouri Community Colleges to Receive $10.8 Million to Expand Training Programs

Missouri's 12 community colleges will share a $10.8 million federal grant to expand short-term job training programs and make more of these options eligible for federal financial aid. St. Louis Community College will be the fiscal agent for the grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor and will distribute the funds among the institutions, Chancellor Jeff Pittman said Wednesday.
The funds will allow colleges to work to make 44 existing short-term training and certification programs eligible for Workforce Pell, a new federal program aimed at helping low-income students cover tuition and fees. The initiative expands access from Pell Grants, which have traditionally helped low-income college students, to shorter job training programs.

In addition, community colleges will use some of the money to develop 34 new short-term programs that could also be eligible for Workforce Pell. These programs can include certifications for truck drivers, which at St. Louis Community College can be completed in about four to five weeks, and 12-week training to become technicians tasked with cleaning and preparing surgical equipment. Workforce Pell is available for programs that offer between eight and 14 weeks of instruction.
St. Louis Community College will also use part of the grant to improve tracking of these programs, as Missouri does not currently keep complete records on students enrolled in short-term trainings. Pittman noted that the new data could help learn how many students complete the programs and whether they get employment after finishing them. The college has seen enrollment increases since launching its Transform STLCC initiative in 2021 and surpassed 18,000 students this fall, according to Pittman.
