A tragedy in Guatemala has deeply shaken the Hispanic community in St. Louis and drawn national attention across the United States. Nixon Giovanni Pérez Paz, 43, and his wife, Glendy Marisol González de la Cruz, 25, a couple who until recently lived in Overland, Missouri, were found murdered in a sugarcane field in southern Guatemala. Their youngest daughter, a 14-month-old U.S. citizen born in St. Louis, was found alive, crying beside her mother's body. The couple also leaves behind two other daughters, ages 5 and 11.

Mounting financial pressure and fear of being detained and separated from her daughters ultimately led her to make a life-changing decision: voluntarily return to Guatemala in June to reunite with her husband.

However, authorities have not established any official link between the deportation and the killings.

The tragedy sparked an emotional response in Overland. Hundreds gathered Sunday evening outside City Hall to honor the couple and show support for the three orphaned girls. Flowers, candles and handwritten messages covered the memorial as mourners quietly paid their respects.
