Permanent Standard Time Could Bring Earlier Summer Sunsets Across the U.S.
Lawmakers are considering competing proposals that would eliminate the twice-yearly clock

changes, but each would have different effects on daylight. While the Sunshine Protection Act would make daylight saving time permanent, the bipartisan Sunshine for Our Kids Act of 2026 would establish permanent standard time, causing the sun to rise and set about an hour earlier throughout the year.
If permanent standard time is adopted, many cities across the country would experience summer sunsets before 8 p.m., with most occurring between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. In some areas, sunrise could occur before 5 a.m., giving residents more daylight in the early morning but shorter evenings.

An analysis of 34 U.S. cities found that the latest summer sunset under permanent standard time would occur at 10:43 p.m. in Juneau, Alaska, and 8:26 p.m. in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In nearly every other city included in the study, sunsets would take place before 8 p.m.
Health experts generally favor permanent standard time because increased morning sunlight is believed to better support sleep patterns, mental health and overall well-being. Congress has not yet decided which proposal, if either, will become law.
