Autoridades de Illinois y Missouri inauguraron oficialmente el Puente Conmemorativo Don Welge, una moderna estructura de 307 millones de dólares que une las ciudades de Chester, Illinois, y Perryville, Missouri, reemplazando al antiguo puente construido en 1942. La obra busca mejorar la seguridad, la movilidad y el desarrollo económico de toda la región.

Authorities in Illinois and Missouri officially opened the Don Welge Memorial Bridge, a modern $307 million structure linking the cities of Chester, Illinois, and Perryville, Missouri, replacing the old bridge built in 1942. The work seeks to improve safety, mobility and economic development of the entire region.

El nuevo puente lleva el nombre de Don Welge, empresario y líder comunitario que durante años impulsó la construcción de un nuevo cruce sobre el río Mississippi. Welge dedicó gran parte de su vida a promover el proyecto, convencido de que era fundamental para fortalecer el crecimiento económico y la conexión entre ambos estados.

The new bridge is named after Don Welge, a businessman and community leader who for years pushed for the construction of a new crossing over the Mississippi River. Welge dedicated much of his life to promoting the project, convinced that it was essential to strengthen economic growth and the connection between the two states.

La nueva infraestructura sustituye al histórico puente de Chester, cuya antigüedad y costos de mantenimiento hacían necesaria su renovación. Además, este cruce representa un enlace estratégico, ya que es el único puente sobre el río Mississippi en un tramo de aproximadamente 160 kilómetros entre Cape Girardeau y el condado de St. Louis.

The new infrastructure replaces the historic Chester Bridge, whose age and maintenance costs made it necessary to renovate. In addition, this crossing represents a strategic link, as it is the only bridge over the Mississippi River in a stretch of approximately 160 kilometers between Cape Girardeau and St. Louis County.

Durante la ceremonia, funcionarios destacaron que el puente facilitará el transporte diario de trabajadores, empresas, productos agrícolas e industriales, beneficiando tanto a las comunidades locales como al comercio regional. También señalaron que la obra fortalecerá la integración económica entre el sur de Illinois y el sureste de Missouri durante las próximas décadas.

During the ceremony, officials stressed that the bridge will facilitate the daily transportation of workers, companies, agricultural and industrial products, benefiting both local communities and regional commerce. They also noted that the work will strengthen economic integration between southern Illinois and southeastern Missouri for decades to come.

El tránsito comenzará a trasladarse de forma gradual al nuevo puente en las próximas semanas, mientras se inicia el proceso de demolición de la estructura anterior. Traffic will begin to gradually move to the new bridge in the coming weeks, while the demolition process of the previous structure begins. The authorities believe that this investment will ensure a safer, more efficient and reliable connection for future generations.
