Kirkwood City Council is facing a growing divide over the future of its municipal water system, after officials proposed raising rates by up to an additional 25% over the next decade to fund urgent infrastructure repairs.

Durante una reunión celebrada el jueves, el personal municipal explicó que el sistema necesitaría aproximadamente 90 millones de dólares en mejoras durante los próximos 10 años. Las obras incluyen el reemplazo de tuberías y otros componentes deteriorados que han provocado fallas, como la rotura de una línea principal que dejó baja presión de agua en toda la ciudad.

During a meeting Thursday, city staff explained that the system would need approximately $90 million in improvements over the next 10 years. The works include the replacement of pipes and other deteriorated components that have caused failures, such as the rupture of a main line that left low water pressure throughout the city.

Kirkwood is the only city in St. Louis County that maintains its own water system. In April, the City Council approved a 5% increase, but new projections indicate that fares would have to rise another 25% by 2037, in addition to the cumulative increase of around 50% applied over the last few years.

Some councilmembers questioned whether the city can take on the repairs as it tries to resolve the shortfall of Kirkwood Electric, which exceeded its budget by $15 million last year. Among the alternatives discussed is the possible sale of the system to Missouri American Water, a company that supplies much of the metropolitan area.

Other members of the City Council opposed linking the tariff debate with a possible sale and defended the continuity of the service under municipal control. The council will have to decide whether to approve further increases, reduce the scope of repairs or formally consider transferring the system to a private company.
