Artificial intelligence enters politics as fake ads raise concerns in Missouri and Kansas

Artificial intelligence is changing how political messages are presented in the United States, but it is also raising concerns about misinformation. In Missouri and Kansas, some political campaigns are using AI-generated content, while neither state has a law requiring this type of advertising to be identified in every case.

The concern is that these tools can create realistic-looking images, videos, or scenes showing candidates saying or doing things that never happened. This can make it harder for voters to distinguish legitimate political criticism from manipulated content designed to influence their opinions.
In Missouri, state Senator Joe Nicola introduced proposals in 2025 and 2026 that would

require disclosures on certain political ads created with artificial intelligence. Neither proposal became law. Lawmakers and officials hope the issue will be discussed again when the legislative session resumes in January.
In this environment, voters can take precautions: verify claims through reliable news outlets, look for the full version of a video, and check candidates’ official accounts before sharing striking content. A convincing image is not always proof that an event actually happened.
