A California woman has been sentenced to three years in federal prison after orchestrating the kidnapping of her teenage son and sending him to a controversial Christian boarding school in Missouri that later shut down amid abuse allegations.

Según fiscales federales, Shana Gaviola, de 39 años, pagó para que dos hombres sacaran por la fuerza a su hijo de una pista de patinaje sobre hielo en Fresno, California, en 2021. El joven, de 16 años en ese momento, fue esposado y transportado durante 27 horas hasta la escuela Agape Boarding School en Stockton, Missouri.

Federal prosecutors said 39-year-old Shana Gaviola paid two men to forcibly remove her son from an ice-skating rink in Fresno, California, in 2021. The teenager, who was 16 at the time, was handcuffed and driven 27 hours to Agape Boarding School in Stockton, Missouri.

The case sparked national outrage because the teenager already had a temporary restraining order against his mother and was seeking legal emancipation before the abduction occurred.

Las autoridades indicaron que el joven permaneció retenido aproximadamente ocho días en Agape Boarding School, una institución señalada por múltiples acusaciones de abuso físico, emocional y psicológico antes de cerrar definitivamente en 2023.

Authorities said the teen was held at Agape Boarding School for about eight days. The institution faced multiple allegations of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse before permanently shutting down in 2023.

Los fiscales aseguraron que Gaviola utilizó documentos judiciales falsificados para convencer a los transportistas de que tenían autorización legal para llevarse al menor.

Prosecutors stated that Gaviola used falsified court documents to convince the transporters they had legal authority to take the teen.
