“Somos St. Louis”: Celebrating Latino Stories That Are Also St. Louis History

ST. LOUIS, Missouri. Durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana 2026, organizaciones, empresas, instituciones educativas y grupos comunitarios de toda la región están invitados a unirse bajo un mismo mensaje: “Somos St. Louis”, una iniciativa que busca reconocer a las personas, lugares, historias y contribuciones latinas que forman parte de la identidad y del desarrollo de St. Louis.
ST. LOUIS, Missouri. During Hispanic Heritage Month 2026, organizations, businesses, educational institutions, and community groups throughout the region are invited to unite around one shared message: “Somos St. Louis,” an initiative that seeks to recognize the Latino people, places, stories, and contributions that are part of the identity and development of St. Louis.
La campaña es presentada en colaboración con la Missouri Historical Society y toma inspiración de su iniciativa narrativa “I Am St. Louis”, dedicada a destacar a las personas, lugares y momentos que han ayudado a construir la historia de nuestra región.
The campaign is presented in partnership with the Missouri Historical Society and draws inspiration from its “I Am St. Louis” storytelling initiative, which highlights the people, places,
and moments that have helped shape the history of our region.

En el corazón de Somos St. Louis existe un mensaje sencillo pero significativo:
“Latino history is St. Louis history.” — “La historia latina es historia de St. Louis.”
La iniciativa busca recordar que la presencia latina en nuestra región no es una historia separada de St. Louis, sino parte de la historia colectiva de una comunidad que continúa creciendo, evolucionando y aportando a la ciudad y sus alrededores.
At the heart of Somos St. Louis is a simple but meaningful message: “Latino history is St. Louis history.” The initiative emphasizes that the Latino presence in our region is not a story separate from St. Louis, but part of the collective history of a community that continues to grow, evolve, and contribute to the city and surrounding region.
Desde familias y empresarios hasta artistas, trabajadores, estudiantes, profesionales, líderes y organizaciones comunitarias, las historias de la comunidad latina forman parte del tejido social, económico y cultural de St. Louis.
From families and business owners to artists, workers, students, professionals, leaders, and community organizations, Latino stories are part of the social, economic, and cultural fabric of St. Louis.

A Campaign That Belongs to the Entire Community
Uno de los aspectos más importantes de Somos St. Louis es que no pretende representar una sola voz ni una sola experiencia.
One of the most important aspects of Somos St. Louis is that it is not intended to represent a single voice or a single experience.
El Hispanic Leaders Group ayudó a poner en marcha la campaña, pero la intención es que el concepto sea adoptado y reinterpretado por toda la comunidad durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana.
The Hispanic Leaders Group helped launch the campaign, but the intention is for the concept to be embraced and interpreted by the entire community throughout Hispanic Heritage Month.
Sociedades culturales, organizaciones que sirven a la población latina, empresas, escuelas y diferentes grupos y aliados de la región están invitados a participar y utilizar Somos St. Louis para contar sus propias historias.
Cultural societies, Latino-serving organizations, businesses, schools, community groups, and partners throughout the region are encouraged to participate and use Somos St. Louis to tell their own stories.
La campaña cuenta con logotipos, plantillas y otros materiales para facilitar la participación. Sin embargo, los organizadores invitan a cada institución a personalizarlos incorporando fotografías de miembros de su comunidad, historias de sus organizaciones, testimonios, tradiciones culturales y reconocimientos a líderes locales.
The campaign provides logos, templates, and other materials to make participation easier. However, organizers encourage each institution to personalize them by incorporating photographs of community members, organizational histories, testimonials, cultural traditions, and recognition of local leaders.

Many Cultures, One Shared Story
La comunidad latina de St. Louis está integrada por personas procedentes de numerosos países, generaciones y experiencias.
The Latino community of St. Louis is made up of people from many countries, generations, and experiences.
Precisamente por esa diversidad, Somos St. Louis propone utilizar un mensaje compartido sin pedir a cada comunidad que renuncie a su propia identidad. Por el contrario, la iniciativa invita a organizaciones y participantes a mostrar aquello que hace única a su cultura y, al mismo tiempo, reconocer su conexión con St. Louis.
Precisely because of that diversity, Somos St. Louis proposes using a shared message without asking individual communities to give up their own identities. Instead, the initiative invites organizations and participants to showcase what makes their culture unique while recognizing their connection to St. Louis.
Las organizaciones pueden destacar personas y lugares importantes para sus comunidades, recordar momentos históricos, compartir historias culturales, reconocer contribuciones actuales y presentar a las nuevas generaciones que continúan transformando nuestra región.
Organizations can highlight people and places important to their communities, remember historical moments, share cultural stories, recognize current contributions, and introduce new generations that continue to transform our region.
El objetivo es que, a lo largo del Mes de la Herencia Hispana, diferentes organizaciones cuenten versiones propias de una historia común: los latinos están aquí, pertenecen a St. Louis y han contribuido —y continúan contribuyendo— a la historia de nuestra región.
The goal is for different organizations throughout Hispanic Heritage Month to tell their own versions of one shared story: Latinos are here, they belong in St. Louis, and they have contributed — and continue to contribute — to the history of our region.

An Invitation to Tell Our Own Stories
El mensaje también representa una invitación para que la comunidad documente su propia historia.
Una fotografía familiar, la historia de un negocio que comenzó hace décadas, una organización que abrió caminos para nuevas generaciones, un festival cultural, un restaurante, un artista, un trabajador, un estudiante o un líder comunitario pueden convertirse en parte de Somos St. Louis.
The message also represents an invitation for the community to document its own history.
A family photograph, the story of a business founded decades ago, an organization that opened doors for new generations, a cultural festival, a restaurant, an artist, a worker, a student, or a community leader can all become part of Somos St. Louis.
No se trata únicamente de mirar hacia el pasado. La campaña también busca mostrar cómo las comunidades latinas continúan influyendo en el presente y participando en la construcción del futuro de St. Louis.
It is not only about looking at the past. The campaign also seeks to show how Latino communities continue to influence the present and participate in building the future of St. Louis.

La iniciativa ya está generando apoyo entre organizaciones y líderes comunitarios.
Suzanne Sierra, directora ejecutiva del St. Louis Mosaic Project, agradeció a Ben Molina por su constancia en reunir a la comunidad durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana y reconoció a la Missouri Historical Society por su papel como una institución importante para St. Louis.
The initiative is already generating support among community organizations and leaders.
Suzanne Sierra, Executive Director of the St. Louis Mosaic Project, thanked Ben Molina for his consistency in bringing the community together during Hispanic Heritage Month and recognized the Missouri Historical Society for its important role in St. Louis.

La campaña resume finalmente su espíritu con tres frases que buscan convertirse en un mensaje compartido durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana:
“We are here. We are part of St. Louis. Somos St. Louis.”
“Estamos aquí. Somos parte de St. Louis. Somos St. Louis.”
Más que un lema para una celebración de un mes, Somos St. Louis plantea una oportunidad para reconocer que cada historia familiar, cada negocio, cada organización, cada tradición y cada contribución de nuestra comunidad también ayuda a escribir la historia de la región.
More than a slogan for a month-long celebration, Somos St. Louis represents an opportunity to recognize that every family story, every business, every organization, every tradition, and every contribution from our community also helps write the history of the region.
