Boxer Ryan Garcia's B test came back positive for a banned substance, ESPN reported Thursday, but the boxer's legal team and promoter emphasized the negative result of a hair sample to ensure he did not violate the rules. Exhibit A for Garcia, who floored Devin Haney three times in New York to win by majority decision on April 20, had tested positive for ostarine on May 1.
García's lawyers - Paul Greene, Matt Kaiser, Darin Chávez and Guadalupe Valencia - indicated in a statement that the fighter presented the hair sample after the first positive. They also pointed to the results of the first test to argue that “the levels were too low” and were “in the range of a billionth of a gram,” as evidence that Garcia was not guilty of taking performance-enhancing drugs.
“Ryan has voluntarily undergone testing throughout his career, and these have always shown negative results,” his lawyers said in a statement. “He also tested negative on multiple occasions before the Haney fight.” Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Garcia, also similarly defended his innocence.
“As indicated when the initial evidence emerged, we believe in Ryan — and we continue to do so today,” the developer said in a statement. Haney posted comments on social media site X expressing her skepticism about the results of the hair sample. “Ryan and his team knew he would test positive. That's why they did that stupid 'hair test' thing on their own, which who knows who did it," Haney said.
