a fight outside Hazelwood East High School in Missouri, the state's Attorney
General, Andrew Bailey, blamed the school district's diversity program for the
incident. A lawyer from the mostly Black suburb of St. Louis accused Bailey of
showing clear racial bias.Bailey,
who is running for re-election, announced an investigation into the Hazelwood
School District for possible violations of state human rights laws following a
serious fight on March 8th that left a girl hospitalized with head injuries.He
claimed that the district's diversity and inclusion programs led to the fight,
which occurred after school hours near the high school. Bailey suggested that
if not for these programs, a school resource officer would have been present.The
lawyer representing the district criticized Bailey's assumptions of racial
issues and questioned his focus on this incident compared to others in nearby
districts. The Hazelwood School District is predominantly Black, with a small
White population.The
district faced issues with school resource officers in 2021 when they required
police to undergo diversity training. This led to disagreements between police
departments and the schools, resulting in private security guards replacing
some officers.Despite
these challenges, Hazelwood School District maintains that their DEI
initiatives do not compromise student safety and are essential for student
well-being and learning.
