El próximo 17 de febrero de 2026, organizaciones latinas de todo Missouri se están organizando para ir al Capitolio estatal en Jefferson City y reunirse con los legisladores. En St. Louis, una de las organizaciones que ha liderado este esfuerzo durante años es el Hispanic Leaders Group, que ha impulsado la participación cívica de nuestra comunidad a nivel estatal.
On February 17, 2026, Latino organizations from across Missouri are organizing a trip to the state Capitol in Jefferson City to meet with legislators. In St. Louis, one of the organizations that has led this effort for years is the Hispanic Leaders Group, which has promoted civic engagement within our community at the state level.
Gracias a este trabajo constante, el Hispanic Capitol Day se ha convertido en un espacio real de diálogo. El año pasado, más de 200 personas acudimos al Capitolio para hablar directamente con congresistas de ambos partidos. No fue un gesto simbólico. Fue efectivo. Cuando los legisladores ven a una comunidad organizada, informada y presente, escuchan.
Thanks to this consistent work, Hispanic Capitol Day has become a real space for dialogue. Last year, more than 200 people went to the Capitol to speak directly with legislators from both parties. It was not a symbolic gesture. It was effective. When lawmakers see an organized, informed, and present community, they listen.
Y escuchan aún más cuando quienes hablan vienen de sus propios distritos, porque entienden algo muy claro: esa persona es un voto.
And they listen even more when the voices speaking come from their own districts, because they understand one very clear thing: that person is a vote.
No solo somos fuerza laboral: somos poder cívico
Con frecuencia se habla del inmigrante únicamente como mano de obra. Esa es una visión incompleta. La comunidad latina también es poder de votación, liderazgo comunitario y voz política. A medida que nuestra comunidad crece, también aumenta nuestra influencia en las urnas. Y si los representantes quieren nuestros votos, deben entender nuestras preocupaciones reales: educación, salud, vivienda, seguridad, dignidad y derechos humanos.
We Are Not Only a Workforce: We Are Civic Power
Too often, immigrants are spoken of only as labor. That is an incomplete view. The Latino community is also a voting force, community leadership, and a political voice. As our community grows, so does our influence at the ballot box. And if representatives want our votes, they must understand our real concerns: education, health, housing, safety, dignity, and human rights.
Estar presentes en el Capitolio no es confrontación. Es participación democrática.
Being present at the Capitol is not confrontation. It is democratic participation.
Un momento crítico: decenas de proyectos que nos afectan
Hoy, el Hispanic Leaders Group han identificado casi 30 proyectos de ley en Missouri que afectan directa o indirectamente a la comunidad inmigrante y latina. Algunos amplían el acceso a servicios y protecciones; otros crean barreras, generan miedo o promueven la criminalización. Tal vez alguno de esos proyectos no te afecte hoy. Tal vez no impacte directamente a tu familia. Pero sí afecta a nuestra comunidad en conjunto.
A Critical Moment: Dozens of Bills That Affect Us
Today, the Hispanic Leaders Group has identified nearly 30 bills in Missouri that directly or indirectly affect the immigrant and Latino community. Some expand access to services and protections; others create barriers, generate fear, or promote criminalization. Maybe one of those bills does not affect you today. Maybe it does not directly impact your family. But it does affect our community as a whole.
El silencio también comunica.
La ausencia también tiene consecuencias.
Silence also communicates.
Absence also has consequences.
Desde mi experiencia personal y profesional
Como abogado de inmigración, veo todos los días cómo mis clientes contribuyen a esta comunidad. Veo cómo trabajan, cómo pagan impuestos, cómo crían hijos que son ciudadanos estadounidenses. Y también veo cómo crecen sus miedos cuando se aprueban leyes que los señalan o los excluyen. Muchos de ellos llegaron huyendo de violencia, pobreza o persecución.
From My Personal and Professional Experience
As an immigration attorney, I see every day how my clients contribute to this community. I see how they work, how they pay taxes, how they raise children who are U.S. citizens. And I also see how their fears grow when laws are passed that single them out or exclude them. Many of them arrived fleeing violence, poverty, or persecution.
Y aun así, hicieron de Missouri su hogar.
Cuando voy al Capitolio, pienso en ellos. Pienso en sus historias. Pienso en la responsabilidad que tenemos quienes sí podemos estar ahí.
And yet, they made Missouri their home.
When I go to the Capitol, I think of them. I think of their stories. I think of the responsibility we have—those of us who can be there.
El mensaje es simple
Los derechos de los latinos importan.
Los derechos de quienes viven en Missouri importan.
Y los congresistas necesitan verlo, escucharlo y entenderlo.
Estar presentes en el Capitolio es decir con claridad:
Aquí estamos.
Contribuimos.Votamos.Y nuestros derechos cuentan.
The Message Is Simple
Latino rights matter.The rights of those who live in Missouri matter.And legislators need to see it, hear it, and understand it.
Being present at the Capitol is clearly saying:We are here.We contribute.We vote.And our rights count.
