A federal judge on Monday suspended the enforcement of a California law that prohibited federal immigration agents from wearing face coverings during operations, though she upheld the requirement that they must visibly display identification including their agency and badge number while on duty.

La norma, firmada en septiembre por el gobernador Gavin Newsom, convertía a California en el primer estado en restringir el uso de cubiertas faciales por parte de la mayoría de los agentes migratorios, tras una serie de redadas de alto perfil realizadas por el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) en Los Ángeles durante el verano. The law, signed in September by Governor Gavin Newsom, made California the first state to restrict the use of face coverings by most immigration agents, following a series of high-profile raids conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles during the summer. However, its implementation was blocked after the Trump administration challenged the law in court.

The lawsuit filed by the federal government argued that the ban jeopardized the safety of the agents, who—according to the Department of Homeland Security—have been the target of threats, assaults, and the dissemination of personal information, including their home addresses. During a hearing in January, federal lawyers cited a case in Los Angeles, where several people allegedly followed an ICE agent to his residence and shared his location on social media.

For their part, legal representatives for California maintained that there was no conclusive evidence that the agents could not perform their duties without face coverings and pointed out that some U.S. citizens detained by federal agents claimed to have believed they were being kidnapped due to the lack of clear identification.
