Burnout Prevention: From Hydration Breaks to Mindful Breaks

There was much discussion during the 2026 FIFA World Cup about so-called “hydration breaks,” although, fortunately, this medical and sporting practice has been in place for some time. Criticism of these very brief breaks shows how far we still are from recognizing the importance of rest in preventing burnout, because sports are also a form of work.

Rehydration and cooling breaks began during a match at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, although breaks had also been implemented earlier, during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Over time, as global temperatures have risen, FIFA and soccer leagues have moved from using these breaks only during extreme weather emergencies to making them standard practice in summer tournaments to protect players' health.

It is therefore no coincidence that European trade unionists have launched a global petition calling for breaks to become widespread in industries heavily affected by weather conditions. These include construction workers, agricultural workers, drivers, cleaning personnel, and other employees who spend hours working in dangerously high temperatures without rest.

Extreme heat has increased the number of fatalities across much of the world, but it is not the only danger. Taking breaks at work, even in optimal indoor climates, is essential to prevent burnout, protect mental health, and improve productivity and a sense of belonging. Even when working in perfectly air-conditioned offices, we can still die from work-related exhaustion.

It is important to clarify that taking a break does not simply mean stopping for a few minutes every so often. Rest is not a reward for exhaustion or merely a concession granted by an employer. A “mindful break” is a fundamental human right and a key element of organizational infrastructure for mitigating burnout syndrome and breaking away from the culture of being “always connected.”

Rest should be structured around daily microbreaks to help deactivate the stress response in real time. These are short, intentional pauses lasting one to five minutes between tasks, without checking mobile phones or browsing social media, and incorporating breathing exercises or stretching.

Weekly breaks aim to ensure digital disconnection outside working hours. Their purpose is to interrupt the constant release of cortisol associated with notifications and allow restorative sleep. Finally, macrobreaks (vacations and leaves of absence) help provide prolonged disconnection, mental renewal, and deeper physiological recovery, restoring emotional well-being and creativity.
