How many extraordinary things could be right before our eyes without us being able to see them?
Lo que aún no has descubierto :El tilcayo, nueva especie de felino identificada en Bolivia, inspira a Ismael Cala a reflexionar sobre la curiosidad y lo que aún podemos descubrir.
En los bosques nubosos de los Yungas, en Bolivia, científicos acaban de confirmar una nueva especie de felino: el tilcayo. Es pequeño, incluso más que muchos gatos domésticos, y durante años fue confundido con otras especies de apariencia similar. Solo cuando alguien se detuvo a observar sus diferencias y decidió investigar, los análisis genéticos revelaron la sorpresa: estábamos frente a una especie distinta. La primera de felino vivo descrita por la ciencia en más de cien años.
In the cloud forests of the Yungas, in Bolivia, scientists have just confirmed a new feline species: the tilcayo. It is small, even smaller than many domestic cats, and for years it was confused with other similar-looking species. Only when someone stopped to observe its differences and decided to investigate did genetic analyses reveal the surprise: we were looking at a distinct species. The first living feline species described by science in more than a hundred years.
La noticia me fascina por lo que significa científicamente, pero todavía más por la metáfora que contiene.
The news fascinates me because of what it means scientifically, but even more because of the metaphor it contains.
Uno de los investigadores explicó que este animal había permanecido oculto porque nadie lo estaba buscando.
One of the researchers explained that this animal had remained hidden because no one was looking for it.
¿Cuántas cosas de nuestra vida permanecen también ocultas por la misma razón?
How many things in our lives also remain hidden for the same reason?
Llegamos a cierta edad y comenzamos a comportarnos como si ya conociéramos el mapa completo. Creemos saber quiénes somos, qué podemos hacer, qué nos gusta, cómo funciona nuestra pareja, hasta dónde puede llegar nuestra carrera. Dejamos de explorar porque confundimos experiencia con certeza.
We reach a certain age and begin to behave as if we already know the entire map. We believe we know who we are, what we can do, what we like, how our relationship works, and how far our career can go. We stop exploring because we confuse experience with certainty.
Y pocas cosas envejecen tanto el espíritu como creer que ya lo hemos visto todo.
And few things age the spirit as much as believing that we have already seen it all.
Descubrir exige curiosidad, pero también humildad. Significa aceptar que nuestras conclusiones pueden estar incompletas. Atreverse a volver a mirar aquello que parecía conocido y preguntarse: ¿y si aquí hay algo que todavía no estoy viendo?
Discovery requires curiosity, but also humility. It means accepting that our conclusions may be incomplete. It means daring to look again at what seemed familiar and asking ourselves: what if there is something here that I still haven't seen?
Puede ser un talento que nunca desarrollaste. Una conversación pendiente. Una pasión abandonada. Una oportunidad escondida detrás de aquello que siempre hiciste de la misma manera.
It could be a talent you never developed. A conversation left unfinished. An abandoned passion. An opportunity hidden behind something you have always done the same way.
El tilcayo llevaba allí mucho antes de recibir un nombre científico. Lo nuevo no era su existencia. Lo nuevo fue nuestra capacidad de reconocerlo.
The tilcayo had been there long before it received a scientific name. What was new was not its existence. What was new was our ability to recognize it.
Quizás ocurra igual con muchas posibilidades de nuestra vida.
Perhaps the same is true of many possibilities in our lives.
No demos nada por sentado. Ni el mundo. Ni las personas. Mucho menos nosotros mismos.
Let us take nothing for granted. Not the world. Not other people. Much less ourselves.
Mientras conservemos la curiosidad, siempre quedará algún territorio por descubrir.
As long as we preserve our curiosity, there will always be some territory left to discover.
