Are You Preparing Your Children for Life or Solving Everything for Them?

Inteligencia Emocional
Inteligencia Emocional

Emotional intelligence is the superpower that helps our children manage their emotions so they can face life's challenges.

We want our children to be happy, yet in our attempt to protect them from frustration, failure, and difficulties, many of us as parents end up doing exactly the opposite of what they need: we take away their opportunity to learn how to solve problems.

Does your child get frustrated and you rush to solve the problem? Do they forget an assignment and you take care of it? Do they have a conflict with a friend and you immediately intervene? Do they not know how to do something and you prefer to do it yourself because “it's faster”?

It may seem like love, protection, or even a way of helping. But when it becomes a pattern, it can prevent children from developing autonomy, judgment, and the ability to face life.

The uncomfortable question is: are we raising children who are capable of solving problems, or children who need someone else to solve them for them?

Autonomy does not magically appear when our children turn 18. It is built from an early age through responsibilities, boundaries, consequences and, above all, the ability to tolerate the discomfort that comes with learning.

And here lies a connection that we often overlook: before learning how to solve a problem, a child needs to learn how to manage what they feel when facing that problem.

A child who has never learned to tolerate frustration will find it difficult to accept “no,” face a consequence, or persist when something does not go well. If every time anger, fear, or frustration appears an adult intervenes to eliminate that discomfort, the message the child may receive is: “You are not capable of handling this on your own.”

Crianza Consciente
Crianza Consciente

Fifteen years from now, no one will ask your child what grade they received on a test, but whether they know how to solve problems, lead people, and adapt to change.

Emotional intelligence is the superpower that helps our children recognize what they feel, understand what others feel, and learn to manage their emotions so they can face challenges with greater empathy, confidence, and autonomy. Because there are no “good” or “bad” emotions, nor is there a single correct way to manage them: each child develops different emotional tools that can become their own superpower.

Emotional education does not mean shielding children from difficult emotions. It means teaching them to recognize, express, regulate, and act despite them. As parents, our job is not to build a life without obstacles for them. It is to give them the tools to overcome those obstacles.

Vamos a querer intervenir.

This also means that we, as adults, must learn to tolerate the discomfort of watching our children make mistakes. Because yes, it will hurt to see them frustrated. We will want to intervene. We will want to spare them from failure. Yet making mistakes, facing consequences, and trying again are fundamental experiences for developing character.

Because the true success of parenting is not having our children need us to solve everything for them. It is reaching the day when they can do it for themselves.
