According to UN Women, the restrictions imposed since 2021 have not only remained in place but have intensified, reinforcing a system that systematically excludes women from public life and severely limits their fundamental freedoms.

Actualmente, las niñas tienen prohibido asistir a la escuela a partir de los 13 años, lo que impide su acceso a la educación secundaria y universitaria. Las mujeres han sido vetadas de la mayoría de los empleos, especialmente en el sector público y en organizaciones no gubernamentales, y tienen prohibida la participación política. Girls are currently banned from attending school beyond the age of 13, cutting off access to secondary and higher education. Women have been barred from most forms of employment, particularly in the public sector and non-governmental organizations, and are excluded from political participation. In many regions, they are not allowed to leave their homes without a male guardian, restricting their mobility, economic independence, and access to essential services. Even within their own households, many women have lost the authority to make personal decisions.

Healthcare access has also deteriorated significantly. Restrictions preventing women from studying medicine, combined with limitations on receiving care from male doctors in certain contexts, have dramatically reduced access to medical services. These measures, along with cuts to international aid, have contributed to rising maternal mortality rates, a sharp increase in child marriages, and escalating gender-based violence. Afghanistan now ranks among the countries with the widest gender gaps globally, while poverty and overlapping humanitarian crises disproportionately impact women and girls.

Tanto ONU Mujeres como UNICEF han instado a la comunidad internacional a no permanecer en silencio. Ambas agencias subrayan la necesidad de financiar plenamente las operaciones humanitarias, coordinar los procesos de repatriación de forma segura y digna, y apoyar activamente a las mujeres afganas en la construcción de un futuro con igualdad de derechos. La advertencia es clara: sin una acción inmediata y sostenida, la situación podría deteriorarse aún más, comprometiendo a toda una generación.

Both UN Women and UNICEF have urged the international community not to remain silent. The agencies emphasize the urgent need to fully fund humanitarian operations, coordinate safe and dignified repatriation processes, and actively support Afghan women in building a future grounded in equal rights. Their message is clear: without immediate and sustained action, conditions could deteriorate further, jeopardizing an entire generation.
