The former owners of Northview Village nursing home in north St. Louis have agreed to pay

$365,000 to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by 184 former employees following the facility’s abrupt closure in December 2023.
The settlement represents approximately 20% of a nearly $2 million default judgment the workers obtained in September 2025. The lawsuit targeted businesses tied to Mahklouf “Mark” Suissa and Eric “Ricky” Rothner, who operated nearly 20 nursing homes across Missouri and Illinois over the years.
According to reporting by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the former employees secured the default judgment after the owners failed to contest the case. Settlement negotiations began after the plaintiffs’ attorneys obtained a garnishment against a bank account containing assets connected to the owners.

Carolyn Hawthorne, a nurse who worked at Northview Village for 20 years and the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit, said in a statement distributed by Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare that no amount of money could make up for the harm the situation caused workers’ families.
Hawthorne said she joined the lawsuit to hold the owners accountable and emphasized that the former employees worked to recover the money they were owed.
Northview Village’s closure on an evening in December 2023, shortly before Christmas, prompted a crisis that drew national attention. All 174 residents had to be relocated urgently, while dozens of employees lost their jobs.
During the relocation, one resident wandered away and was later found at a gas station several miles from the facility. Another remained lost on the streets for weeks. Employees worked through the night trying to contact residents’ families and locate new skilled nursing facilities. According to the reporting, they were not paid for this additional work.
An earlier St. Louis Post-Dispatch investigation also found that Rothner and Suissa continued paying themselves millions of dollars through a network of real estate and operating companies as Northview’s resident population declined and its financial problems mounted.
