Archbishop Fulton Sheen’s Beatification to Be Held in St. Louis

La ciudad de St. Louis será sede este jueves 24 de septiembre de una misa de beatificación para el arzobispo Fulton J. Sheen, uno de los últimos pasos en el proceso de la Iglesia Católica para declarar santa a una persona. El evento se realizará a las 2 p.m. en el Dome at America’s Center, donde se espera la asistencia de unas 50,000 personas provenientes de distintas partes del mundo.

St. Louis will host a beatification Mass for Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen on Thursday, Sept. 24, one of the final steps in the Catholic Church’s process toward declaring a person a saint. The event will take place at 2 p.m. at the Dome at America’s Center, where an estimated 50,000 people from around the world are expected to attend.

Sheen creció cerca de Peoria, Illinois, hace más de un siglo y fue ordenado sacerdote en 1919 en la Catedral de St. Mary en Peoria. St. Louis fue elegida como sede de la ceremonia por su cercanía con Peoria y por su capacidad para recibir a una gran cantidad de personas.

Sheen grew up near Peoria, Illinois, more than a century ago and was ordained a priest in 1919 at the Cathedral of St. Mary in Peoria. St. Louis was selected to host the ceremony because of its proximity to Peoria and its ability to accommodate a large crowd.

From the 1930s through the 1960s, Sheen reached millions of people through his radio and television programs. In 1953, an estimated 270,000 people attended a five-day conference on world missions in St. Louis. For 16 years, he also led Catholic Church efforts to relieve human suffering and support the spread of the faith in some of the world’s poorest regions.

Como parte de su trabajo misionero, Sheen creó un rosario de cinco colores dedicado a las misiones mundiales. As part of his missionary work, Sheen created a five-color world mission rosary. A Catholic youth group in Ballwin is among the groups making these rosaries, which will be given to attendees at the beatification Mass. The colors represent different regions of the world and different aspects of missionary work.

El proceso de beatificación está relacionado con un supuesto milagro atribuido a la intercesión de Sheen que fue investigado durante años por la Iglesia Católica. The beatification process is connected to an alleged miracle attributed to Sheen’s intercession that was investigated by the Catholic Church for years. According to Bishop Louis Tylka of the Diocese of Peoria, the case involved a baby who was born without a heartbeat or pulse and, after 61 minutes, began to live again without complications.

Bonnie Enstrom, the mother of James Fulton Engstrom, said Sheen was invoked three times during the hour her son remained without vital signs. James is now 16 years old and is a high school student in the same area where the archbishop grew up.
