Aprender a ganar, aprender a perder

Learning to win, learning to lose

El fútbol tiene una capacidad extraordinaria para unir a millones de personas. Durante poco más de noventa minutos desaparecen las diferencias, las edades, las profesiones y hasta las fronteras. Todos compartimos una misma emoción. Por eso, cuando un Mundial termina, el verdadero resultado no debería medirse solo por el marcador, sino también por la forma en que lo vivimos.

Football has an extraordinary ability to unite millions of people. For just over ninety minutes, differences in age, profession, and even national borders fade away. We all share the same emotion. That is why, when a World Cup ends, the true result should be measured not only by the scoreline but also by how we experienced it.

España merece una sincera enhorabuena por conquistar un nuevo título mundial. Más allá del trofeo, deja una lección de trabajo colectivo, disciplina y perseverancia. Todo campeonato es la recompensa visible de miles de horas invisibles de preparación, sacrificio y confianza en un propósito común.

Spain deserves sincere congratulations for winning another world title. Beyond the trophy, the team leaves behind a lesson in teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Every championship is the visible reward for thousands of unseen hours of preparation, sacrifice, and belief in a shared goal.

Pero este triunfo también nos invita a reflexionar sobre algo que trasciende el deporte. Lamentablemente, cada gran evento deportivo nos recuerda que todavía existen quienes confunden la pasión con la agresión, tanto dentro como fuera de los estadios. Incidentes durante las celebraciones y comportamientos violentos vuelven a demostrar que aún tenemos una asignatura pendiente como sociedad.

Yet, this triumph also invites us to reflect on something that transcends sport. Sadly, every major sporting event reminds us that there are still those who confuse passion with aggression, both inside and outside the stadium. Incidents during celebrations and acts of violence demonstrate once again that, as a society, we still have work to do.

Quizás el mayor desafío no sea enseñar a nuestros hijos a ganar, sino enseñarles a perder.

Perhaps the greatest challenge is not teaching our children how to win, but teaching them how to lose.

Porque ganar con humildad es una virtud. Pero perder con dignidad es una muestra de carácter. El deporte debería formar seres humanos capaces de reconocer el mérito del otro, de aceptar que unas veces se celebra y otras se aprende, de comprender que la derrota no disminuye el valor de quien la experimenta.

For winning with humility is a virtue, but losing with dignity is a mark of character. Sport should shape human beings who are capable of acknowledging the merit of others, accepting that sometimes we celebrate and other times we learn, and understanding that defeat does not diminish the worth of the person who experiences it.

La vida funciona exactamente igual.

Life works exactly the same way.

No siempre obtendremos el ascenso que esperábamos, el proyecto que soñábamos o el reconocimiento que creíamos merecer. Y, sin embargo, nuestra respuesta frente a esos momentos dice mucho más de nosotros que cualquier victoria.

We won’t always get the promotion we hoped for, the project we dreamed of, or the recognition we thought we deserved. And yet, how we respond to those moments reveals far more about us than any victory ever could.

El llamado "juego limpio" no debería quedarse en el reglamento de un torneo. Debería convertirse en una filosofía de vida. Respetar al adversario, rechazar toda forma de violencia, celebrar sin destruir y competir sin deshumanizar son principios que hacen mejor al deporte, pero también a nuestras familias, nuestras escuelas y nuestras comunidades.

So-called "fair play" shouldn't be confined to a tournament rulebook; it should become a philosophy of life. Respecting the opponent, rejecting all forms of violence, celebrating without destruction, and competing without dehumanizing others—these are principles that improve not only sports but also our families, our schools, and our communities.

Ojalá este Mundial no solo sea recordado por un campeón, sino por recordarnos que la grandeza nunca está únicamente en levantar una copa. Está en la forma en que tratamos a quienes están al otro lado del campo.

I hope this World Cup is remembered not just for crowning a champion, but for reminding us that true greatness never lies solely in lifting a trophy. It lies in how we treat those on the other side of the field.

Porque cuando aprendemos a ganar sin soberbia y a perder sin resentimiento, todos terminamos ganando.

Because when we learn to win without arrogance and lose without resentment, we all come out winners.
