The family of Cortez Bufford, a 24-year-old man who died after being shot by a St. Louis police officer in 2019, has agreed to a nearly $1.7 million settlement in a federal wrongful death lawsuit. The proposed settlement, filed Tuesday, sets out a total payment of $1,687,483. However, the settlement still needs to be approved by a federal judge before being finalized.
According to the case documents, approximately $998,000 would go to Bufford's parents, Tammy and Antoine Bufford. More than $550,000 would be attorneys' fees and another $136,000 would cover legal expenses. Officer Lucas Roethlisberger, who shot Bufford, filed a notice stating that he accepted the settlement. The other defendants were removed from the

case during the proceedings.
The shooting occurred on Dec. 12, 2019, near a BP station on Bates Street in South St. Louis. According to the lawsuit filed by the family, Bufford had entered the store with his friend Terrell Phillips and then went outside to smoke a cigarette. The lawsuit alleges that Roethlisberger approached, began chasing Bufford and subsequently pulled out his gun. The family's attorneys also disputed the officers' statements that Bufford was carrying a visible gun in a purse.
The lawsuit further alleges that Bufford was struck by a police vehicle while trying to escape and that he subsequently ran into an alley, where Roethlisberger chased him again. The case also recalls that Bufford had previously settled another lawsuit against the St. Louis Police Department related to a traffic stop during which, according to that lawsuit, eight officers struck him. The family's attorney, Todd Sivia, said he will discuss the settlement once it is finally approved by the court.
